About the Author
Blain Brown was educated at C.W. Post College; M.I.T. and Harvard Graduate School of Design. He began in New York as a commercial still photographer before starting in the film business. After working as a gaffer, be became a cinematographer doing primarily commercials and music videos.After completing his first feature film, he moved to Los Angeles where he has been Director of Photography on 14 feature films as well as national commercials, promotional films, industrials, music videos and documentaries. He has worked in many states in the U.S. as well as Mexico, Canada, India, Italy, France, the Philippines and Jordan.His experience includes 35mm and 16mm projects, as well as 24P High Def, DigiBeta, BetaSP and DV. He has completed projects as a director, editor and screenwriter; with three screenplays produced. He has also taught courses in storytelling and visual communication. As a Director of Photography specializing in features and commercials, he is now based in Los Angeles.His books include A Sense of Place; Motion Picture and Video Lighting and The Filmmaker's Pocket Reference. A completely professional approach

The thing about this book is that it is written from a completely professional point of view. It deals with lighting as it is really practiced on professional movie sets - not like most books on cinematography which seem to be written by people who haven't actually done it all that much in the real world. I've bought about every book there is on movie lighting and most of them are a waste of money.
This book covers everything from a basic introduction to color, exposure and electricity up to the more complex technical issues you have to deal with as a gaffer or cinematographer: very thorough and comprehensive. The Set Technicians book is good if all you are trying to be is an electrician, but this is the one you want if you really want to move up as a gaffer, lighting director or Director of Photography. Except for one chapter (film exposure), everything in the book applies equally well to video, digital video or High Def. There is also a very good chapter on video which covers what you REALLY have to know to work in video lighting.
If you work (or want to work) in the motion picture industry, knowing lighting is the key to advancement and success. This is the book to get if you really want to learn motion picture and video lighting.

A good lighting manual for a beginning cameraperson.

Blaine Brown's book provides a decent explanation of set lighting, it's instruments and protocol. The text, though, seems to speak more to the cameraperson or AC who is curious about lighting. There is a lack of attention given to the juicers and hammers who are actually creating and shaping the light. There is a considerable amount of text granted to electrics and the distribution of power, but much more thorough and much more practically explained definitions are readily available in Harry Box's "Set Lighting Technician's Handbook."

A thick, but informative read.

My ONE complaint with this book is that there's a bit too much technical jargon for my liking, but then again knowing that is part of the film business so I'd better get used to it. The book tells you about all the kinds of studio lights out there and what situations they are used in. This reads more like a text book to me than a casual read, but I don't mind because it's regarding a subject that I find fascinating and is in my opinion one of the most exciting industries in the world!

The choice of topics reflects my interests at the time and the needs of the students taking the course. Initially the lectures were written up for publication in the Lecture Notes series. Even so, no attempt has been made to write a comprehensive treatise on filtering theory, and the book still follows the original plan of the lectures. While this book was in preparation, the two-volume English translation of the work by R. S. Liptser and A. N. Shiryaev has appeared in this series. The first volume and the present book have the same approach to the sub­ ject, viz. that of martingale theory. Liptser and Shiryaev go into greater detail in the discussion of statistical applications and also consider inter­ polation and extrapolation as well as filtering.

Duane W. Roller is Professor Emeritus of Classics at Ohio State University. An historian and archaeologist, he is the author of ten books, most recently Cleopatra: A Biography (2010) and Eratosthenes' Geography (2010), and over 150 scholarly articles on topics in archaeology, ancient history, classical studies and musicology. He has also excavated in Greece, Italy, Turkey, Jordan and Israel.

Giuba II, Kleopatra Selelene and the ancient Mauretania

This is a wanderful book, a very scientific instrument on the history and archaeology of ancient Mauretania (today Algeria and Marocco, in western North Africa), with a complete documentation about the cultural program of Juba and Kleopatra, the most important sign of the kingdom. The book also offer a complete bibliography and list of greek and latin sources. A perfect work, only poor of images.

Outstanding and Imaginative Scholarship

Duane Roller's book is a fascinating portrait of a ruler, a kingdom, and an epoch that deserve to be known more widely. Juba II -- royal prince, ruler of an obscure North African kingdom at Rome's sufferance, scientist and litterateur -- is himself an extrordinarily interesting subject. Add to that the presence of Kleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra and Mark Antony, as well as a thorough and well-documented study of the rich culture of a very late Hellenistic court just before that tradition's demise, and you have a work of scholarship that is both original and informative without resort to the pedantry that too often plagues scholarly studies of the ancient world. Well done!

very interesting historical record on an obscure area of Soviet and Arctic history

The Russian tsars and later, the Soviets, poured great amounts of money and vast resources into exploration of their Arctic lands—in good part to discern some means for opening a sea route from the European Russian lands to those in the far east. Despite the importance of this effort in the history of Russia, there is little scholarship of it in English-language publications outside a couple Arctic-focused academic journals (and these are in turn very hard to find), so this book is a welcome contribution to the literature. I believe it was first published in 1952 and this is a reprint, so I have to commend Cambridge on reprinting something that they had to realize would serve a rather small readership. The Russian-language scholarship is more comprehensive, yet it is very difficult to find even in academic libraries in the United States. This volume should serve 90% of students of Soviet or Russian history who are interested in the topic.

As for the book itself, it's a bit too short, too thin, and lacking in detail in places, but Armstrong's writing is overall very good if dry and will provide a robust introduction to Russian/Soviet efforts at exploration of the Arctic up to around the middle of the 20th century. Again, it's a reprint so some more current information or more current findings on historical information is not in this book, but in general it covers with great scope and decent depth. There is a lot on later Cold War-era Soviet development—especially air bases and the like—that is tied into the Northern Sea Route and that is not covered here but this is still a good place (and one of the only places, indeed) to start on the topic of the Russian Arctic and maritime exploration.

An Excellent Introduction to the Realities of English Language Learners

Do younger children learn language faster? Were our grandparents more receptive to learning English? Should English language learners start grades below their age? These and other issues are addressed in this excellent introductory text to the misconceptions of teaching English as a second language. By dissecting the accepted practices and underlying beliefs that have shaped ESL instruction for many students, the book attempts to bring to light facets of the controversy that have not yet been adequately examined. Using simple language and a very quick read format(this may be it's one drawback as more detailed research would be the next step)it is the perfect book for a study group in a school or an introductory college class. In a nation that is facing ever increasing numbers of immigrant and native born non-English speakers, this book is a good way to begin the dialogue on how to help schools realistically help children learn to be fluent in more than one language. It is definitely worth reading.

This book was required for CIL 500 at NLU. I normally am not too interested in the textbooks for the courses I take, but this one is actually pretty interesting. I used it a lot to answer many of the discussion questions. It's worth getting.

Best book on relationships

I found this book to be a great source of relief and understanding of myself, and my relationships. This book is great if you are wanting to understand why certain relationships in your life are rocky or not what you dreamt they would be. Every relationship starts with YOU (the reader) and once you understand more about yourself (the book helps you in this area) you can start to understand and accept the people in your life while learning to be at ease with you and what you need/require from a healthy relationship. I love this book and it's definitely not the "quick fix" to any problems in your relationship. This isn't the "dump him if.." or "she's no good if.. " this is the, "who are you in the relationship? Why are you in the relationship that you are in?" Fantastic book.

This was a first. I read the book in two sittings, and the only reason I didn't finish it in the first....is because the book store was 5 minutes away from closing. I knew from page one that I wanted, no NEEDED, this book in my home library. The more I read, the more I wished I had a highlighter -- and I'm not one to write in a book. There is SO much wisdom contained in these pages. It's not the typical, "How to attract a partner" or "What you're doing wrong in relationships." It's an honest look at how we can create, nurture, and even end a relationship with respect, love, and honesty. It is profound, and yet so simple to read. In a world where people see relationships as a power play, where one person is the winner and the other the inevitable loser, this book reminds us that it's not "me against him" or "me against her," but "let's figure this out together." I just loved this book. Can't recommend it enough.

Love the Book

Still in the beginning of the book, but just love it so far. It's already worth the money spent, which is why I feel comfortable giving it a premature review.

First, I'll comment on the seller, RRP Books, as I bought a used book. I found the seller's description of the book condition to be very accurate and would trust buying used books from them again. My book is in like new condition and was reasonably priced.

About David Richo... I see several people posted negative reviews and can't help but wonder if at least a few of them completely missed the mark of what the author is getting at in principle. This is not a save your relationship book at all... it is about using mindfulness to be a better partner in a relationship and also find more peace within yourself and your relationships with others... and one could extend these same principles to all interpersonal relationships, not just the romantic ones. I totally get and appreciate what the author is saying and find it immensely helpful. Also, I love that he's incorporating western psyche (Jung and others) and eastern mindfulness and detachment of ego. In essence we need to have a healthy Self and then let go of the egocentric part that sometimes induces fear-based and anxiety-driven thinking / action and impedes healthy relating and being. The author advocates loving through giving our partners (and I would say anybody we love) attention, acceptance, appreciation, affection, and allowing. This is a very healthy way of being, and by the way... if you are doing these things and are in a struggling relationship, you might be able to save it by becoming a better partner -that presupposes, of course, that the relationship is worth saving in that your partner is suitable and also willing to work on being a giving healthy partner who respects you. Equally, if you have to let go of a relationship, applying the principles and practices in this book could help you do so with less pain by realizing what is good and healthy for you and accepting yourself and your partner for who you are as individuals even if you can't make it together as a couple.

My own two cents... in my opinion, a lot of people in this world focus on giving their partner attention, appreciation, and affection early on in a relationship... but if these things dwindle later on they often give way to projected fears that the relationship has changed or one partner is not giving their all, or may be cheating, etc. etc. Really, though, how many people give their partner complete acceptance and allow them to be who they are as they are in the present moment without focusing too much on delving into the past or fearful projection about the future? Sometimes, though, a relationship isn't right for us. By practicing mindfulness we can see when a relationship is healthy, needs work, or needs to be let go of for our benefit. I think people who are happy are not only compatible (even if they are opposites they can be compatible as complements) but really accept their partners and support their partners healthy personal growth without trying to control or change them (or the relationship) into someone they really aren't or aren't meant to be. I think happy couples can also feel relaxed around each other, trust each other, nurture one another's talents and individual life passions, and give themselves and each other space to be who they are and change and grow without feeling threatened. Such feelings arise from our own insecurities. Anyway, I bought this book because I want to practice mindfulness and be a better person for myself and also for the people around me -not just romantic partners.

I digress; getting back to the author... I like David Richo's style, though the writing is more simple and not literary genius. It is also very, very repetitive, but I like that it is repetitive so the key points get driven into my brain. He also writes in a more loose style, which is very suitable for a book on mindfulness. Not everyone will appreciate that and some may prefer a more scholarly or western-style authoritative and linear approach. David Richo's style works for me, and I'll definitely buy other books of his. I am also interested in learning about mindful eating to develop a healthier relationship with food and be a physically healthier person. Healthy body, mind, soul... we are all constant works in progress.
