About the Author

Andrew Shahriari earned his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Kent State University in 2001. He has published two books, Khon Muang Music and Dance Traditions of North Thailand, by White Lotus Co., Ltd., a Bangkok press, and World Music: A Global Journey (co-authored with Kent State Professor Emeritus, Terry E. Miller), published by Routledge, an American press. His fieldwork experiences have taken him thus far to Thailand, China, Europe, Mexico, and many regions of the United States.

Dr. Shahriari is currently an Assistant Professor at Kent State and Coordinator of Online Programs for Music. Other areas of interest include popular world music, rock music history, East Asian music and culture, music and spirituality, as well as music therapy and autism.

Great subject and content, poor execution.

Well written, informative, authoritative, and relevant. The only reason it does not get 5 stars is that for this price, I would have expected the publisher to use more durable materials and maybe could have made the type a tad larger so old eyes could actually read the book without strain.

The essays in this volume offer a broad picture of the ways in which cinema and television have used multiplicities to streamline the production process, and to capitalize on and exploit viewer interest in previously successful and/or sensational story properties. An impressive lineup of established and emerging scholars talk seriously about forms of multiplicity that are rarely discussed as such, including direct-to-DVD films made in Nigeria, cross-cultural Japanese horror remakes, YouTube fan-generated trailer mash-ups, and 1970s animal revenge films. They show how considering the particular bonds that tie texts to one another allows us to understand more about the audiences for these texts and why they crave a version of the same story (or character or subject) over and over again. These findings demonstrate that, far from being lowbrow art, multiplicities are actually doing important cultural work that is very worthy of serious study.

Fraud Fighter is an awesome book!

This book describes a fraud fighter's story. The many different types of fraud he has uncovered. A great read. I purchased it for my fraud class and used excerpts extensively during class time. It is not only a great book to read, but also a tool to use while teaching the topic of financial fraud.

Fascinating

Mr. Wells weaves an amazing tale in this autobiography. Rising from dirt poor conditions and a bad family life, he worked his way through school and became a FBI Special Agent and went on to found the premier fraud-fighting organization in the world.

Interesting Read

After hearing many years of stories about Dr. Wells, his colorful background, and the formulation of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), it was refreshing to finally read a detailed account of Dr. Wells' life, career, and accomplishments, both good and bad, and better understand the man behind the ACFE. I firmly believe that for someone to belong to an organization and a profession, they must take the time to learn and understand how things came to be, and not simply follow along because of its existence. This book provided me the best chronology I have found to date on how the fraud profession and the ACFE came into existence, coupled with Dr. Wells' driving force and commitment to making it happen. While some of the details in Dr. Well's account were unexpected, leaving me to wonder why he revealed some of his more personal information outside the scope of the fraud field, the inclusion completed the puzzle I always had based on my personal interactions with him. Regardless, I still respect him for what he accomplished. Simply the ACFE would not exist today had it not been for his vision and his efforts, and some 60,000 ACFE members worldwide have him and a few others to thank for making it possible.

Ron Rash is the author of the 2009 PEN/Faulkner finalist and New York Times bestselling novel Serena, in addition to four other prize-winning novels, including The Cove, One Foot in Eden, Saints at the River, and The World Made Straight; four collections of poems; and five collections of stories, among them Burning Bright, which won the 2010 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and Chemistry and Other Stories, which was a finalist for the 2007 PEN/Faulkner Award. Each and all of the selections in SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE should be savored slowly and reread.

If this was a perfect world, there would be a book by Ron Rash in the home of every reading family in the United States. Actually, given the man’s output --- five novels, four volumes of poetry and several short story collections --- a dedicated shelf would be more appropriate. I was reminded of how he towers above many of his contemporaries when I began reading SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE, a very generous collection of 34 of his short stories. Thirty-two are culled from previously published collections, while the remaining two are seeing publication in book form for the first time.

Rash is an author’s author. His stories, set in the American South along a timeline that begins during the Civil War and stretches through this afternoon, are shot through with a pristine and often deadly beauty that deserve to be preserved under glass as sterling examples to the fledgling writer and veteran author of how the task, duty and, yes, privilege of storytelling is properly done.

Rash, whose work has earned multiple academic and literary awards, writes primarily of the poor. These are victims of whim and circumstance, and those whose lives are changed forever by a moment’s impulse built upon the shifting sands of poor judgment. The results, more often than not, are stark and unyielding. I have a well-thumbed edition of Rash’s NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY, a collection of short stories that I always keep at the ready. A number of the stories in SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE are taken from that collection, including the title story, about the lives changed by a young girl’s fateful swim in a fast-moving creek. I have read the story about 15 times over the years, and did so again here. I know what happens, yet I kept hoping somehow that the result would be different this time --- and still screamed when it was not.

“Hard Times,” which opens this wondrous collection, is very faintly a mystery of sorts, and a tragedy from beginning to end. The last words of the story, which is set against the stark southern poverty of the Great Depression and deals with a seemingly minor theft, will haunt you until the end of your days. Time and again, Rash hits that sweet spot where language is most beautiful and events are most painful. He also throws in just a bit of lagniappe to set it off and make it memorable. Such is the case in “Lincolnites,” which, as the title might suggest, is set during the closing days of the U.S. Civil War. A woman waiting for her soldier husband to return home finds herself confronted with a rough and dangerous choice. What is going to happen is almost obvious; it is the manner in which it occurs, in addition to Rash’s wonderful telling of the tale, that sticks in one’s mind.

Not all of the stories are entirely tragic. Some are bittersweet. In “Love and Pain in the New South,” a husband and wife on the brink of divorce contemplate each other across a kitchen table, with divorce papers creating a barrier between them, that the husband tries one last time to breach. And there is a bit of droll humor in “The Night the New Jesus Fell to Earth,” in which a shady used car dealer intersects advertising with Christ’s passion to create an almost unthinkable new low. Most of the stories, though, are distilled in sadness, particularly “The Corpse Bird,” in which the knowledge of folklore gleaned from a man’s past is utilized to save a little girl’s life. Possibly. We’ll never know.

Do I have a favorite story from SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE? I might answer “No.” That’s not entirely accurate; it keeps changing, and so quickly that there is no point in mentioning one over another. Each and all of the selections in this volume should be savored slowly and reread. And if someone is looking to make a dramatic television anthology of one-episode stories, there are 34 here with which you can start.

Spectacular.

Something Rich and Strange is Ron Rash's latest collection of short stories. He expertly captures the hardscrabble life and physical landscape of North Carolina, often in the region of Boone. Each story is unique, poignant and never ordinary. These vignettes of ordinary people living on the cusp of folklore and modernity have captured my heart and imagination.

Most of these stories aren't new; I've already read many in Nothing Gold Can Stay, but I have found that they stick with me long afterwards I’m done reading. While reading this particular collection several themes resonated deeply with me: stories set during the Civil War with the beautiful yet savage imagery (“Lincolnites”, “Where the Map Ends”, “The Dowry”); stories which portray the horrors of Methamphetamines (“The Ascent”, “Back of Beyond”, “Those Who Are Dead Are Only Now Forgiven”); and stories that reveal how one decision can have devastating effects (“Night Hawks”, “Into the Gorge”, ”Falling Star”).

My favorite story from Rash continues to be “The Trusty” about the escape of a chain gang prisoner. The ambiguous ending continues to haunt me today.

I've read a couple of Rash’s novels, but I prefer his short stories where I believe he really shines.

Tragic is as tragic does

I find the stories reasonably engaging and the writing is sparse and efficient. The dialogue is well-written and reflects mannerisms of the Appalachian culture, ranging from Civil War era to the present, that is the backdrop for the stories.

However the writing is not as rich in historical detail as for example Charles Frazier's (i.e. "Cold Mountain") and does not really transport me there. There is so much to draw from in this culture and era that is uniquely American and evocative and I feel that Ron Rash's soup is a bit thin.

Each story has a different emotional "punch" and almost all of the stories are tragic in some way. While hard times and Appalachia go together like corn bread and beans, after reading the first 10 or so stories you know how the rest of them are going to end because they all have the same theme. With the endings nearly a forgone conclusion, I find that the writing itself doesn't always quite deliver.

Overall a very solid collection of American short stories and well worth the read.

Does not make it easier - very poorly executed.

If you are looking for a book that will simplify your study of Nursing Pharmacology then don't buy this one. I paid over $40 for it and even though the price seems to have come down a bit I still don't think it's worth the money by a long shot. If you must, buy it used, but really, don't waste your money or time.

1) This book is over 700 pages - it will not simplify your study of Pharm. The pages are dense with text, the graphics are not useful and won't help you remember key points. Much of the information is presented in the form of bulleted lists and no effort seems to have been made to boil things down to what is important or essential.

2) I have several other books from the "Incredibly Easy" series and they were useful. They were shorter and less comprehensive than my text book, but they gave me the essential information. Also, the graphics helped you remember key points and concepts. However, this book fails on all of these counts.

3) The book has a high-level table of contents with only 15 entries. One of them, for example, is Respiratory Drugs. The chapter has numerous internal headings, for example, beta blockers, anticholinergics, etc. but you will only know that by paging through the chapter. A detailed table of contents should have been included in this book. There are no chapter outlines either. So you will have to look in the index for any topic (e.g. anticholinergics) you are interested in - where you will NOT find the page range for the section that deals with this topic. Instead you will find every page, or page range, that mentions the topic you looked up. Bottom line - it is very difficult to find the information you need about a particular class of drugs, or about a particular drug.

4) If you are looking for information on antihistamines, you will have to look in the index for that and you'll find 4 page ranges for it so you'll end up paging through these until you find the page range that actually focuses on antihistamines.

5) And if you are looking for Benadryl, for example, you won't find it in the index. Why? Because this book only believes in using generic names. Even the NCLEX will use both, for example, " The patient is taking diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and reports... " So, if you want information on a drug, unless you know the generic name already you will have to look it up in your drug guide first. Seeing drugs in the form 'generic (Trade)' gives you a larger scaffold on which to build your knowledge, which is why good Pharm texts use that form.

6) I've had this book for almost 6 months and I've gone back to it again and again hoping I would find it more useful, attempting to give it the benefit of the doubt. In the end I find this book to be a waste of my time and money and maybe this review can save you from wasting yours as well. And maybe it will motivate the publishers to re-write it for the next edition, which hopefully will be shorter and much better organized.

This book, although small in size, is large in scope; namely, to provide a comprehensive reference for requirements activities in all sizes of software development projects. This sounds a tall order but the reader is in safe hands as the author succeeds handsomely.
The book assumes that the reader has some experience of requirements specification of software development: it would not be suitable for a complete novice as the information contained is not only densely packed but the sheer variety of techniques contained means that it would be inadvisable to apply them all on a single project. To be fair, the author provides some excellent guidance on which techniques are best suited to which types of project.
The book is split into the following sections: * Stage Setting;
* Elicitation;
* Analysis;
* Specification;
* Validation;
* Management;
* Adapting Practices to Project Types.
Stage Setting gives a straightforward about aligning the project with the business's objectives and links to project governance areas such as risk management.
Elicitation gives a summary of how to define the requirements - starting by ensuring that all the stakeholders are identified prior to the requirements-gathering activity; missing stakeholders are a major cause of requirements being missed. The case study is especially useful here as the list of stakeholders is very comprehensive and would be a good checklist for potential missed stakeholders in your current project.
The author also describes a simple mechanism for ranking stakeholder influence/importance to give the appropriate level of involvement.
The elicitation chapter contains a succinct set of interview questions and details on how to run a focus group - information seldom seen in the popular requirements literature.
The chapter on Analysis is the meat of the book: this contains the techniques for creating requirements models such as use cases, context diagrams, process maps and state diagrams among others. Most importantly, the book suggests which are the most appropriate models to use, dependent on the project's circumstances; namely if you are:
* modeling the business;
* scoping the project;
* fleshing out the user requirements;
* negotiating requirements priorities.
The best parts of the chapter contain information that is hard to obtain in a single volume: namely, what kind of questions to ask the business community in order to derive a data model; the structure and documentation of business rules; and the role of business policies in shaping the requirements. The last category has recently become more important because of increasing legislative and regulatory compliance requirements such as SOX and Basel II.
In addition, there is a detailed section on how to engage the stakeholders in a requirements prioritization exercise.
The chapter on Specification is interesting, especially for those from the Agile community who may be less familiar with the material. The author carefully distinguishes between business requirements, user requirements and software requirements, and then explains where these could be documented. She also gives a good rule of thumb for cross-referencing Use Cases with functional requirements statements. This is useful for those that prefer to start with a high-level Use Case approach but sometimes need to convert to a formal software requirements specification - something the current reviewer has had to do recently.

Great Requirements Material in a Compact Package

Ellen Gottesdiener's "Software Requirements Memory Jogger" contains an incredible wealth of clearly-presented requirements information in a small-format book. This inch-thick "pocket book" is easy to carry around and browse through when a busy requirements analyst has a few minutes to spare.

Ellen addresses all aspects of the requirements engineering process: elicitation, analysis, specification, validation, and management. Each chapter contains a wealth of practical techniques that can help any software team improve how it deals with requirements. Ellen describes a plethora of requirements "models," ways to represent different types of requirements-related information. Every technique is placed in a context so the reader can learn why to use it, what it does, and how to do it. The book presents scores of practical tips, based on Ellen's vast experience working with actual teams to develop requirements for software products.

This book is a handy guide that no requirements or business analyst should be without.

A Great Memory Jogger!!!

The new Software Requirements Memory Jogger by Ellen Gottesdiener is a must for every business analyst and project manager who deals with requirements management -- and that's probably everyone.

Its compact format makes it a valuable reference to have available for a quick review, and its low cost makes it a good personal tool for every team member involved in requirements activities.

The book is logically organized into the major activities of requirements management: preparation (Ellen calls this 'setting the stage'), elicitation, analysis, specification, validation, and requirements management. Each major activity has a large number of applicable tools that create the appropriate outputs for that activity. Within the elicitation activity there are at least 10 tools, and each one is described in enough detail to provide a perspective for appropriateness in your own project situation. All the activities are detailed in this fashion, and the book also has examples and usage tips.

Ellen's chapter on project types, and considerations for requirements management based on these project types is valuable for project managers and analysts structuring their project plans' tasks related to the requirements phase.

This is a great contribution to the requirements management field, and should be in every project manager's library.

Mandatory for all BAs and others interested in Rqmnts

We have a small boutique consulting group that helps companies be more agile and adaptive and were honored to receive one of the first copies of Software Requirments Memory Jogger. Recently, we sent two of our consultants on the road to help different clients work on gathering requirements and mapping business processes. The normal arguements about who had more air miles quickly switched to who was going to take our copy of Ellen's book with them as a resource. In fact, I'm now in the process of buying a copy for each of the consultants in the firm.

I recommend every Business Analyst, Process Analyst, Quality Assurance Analyst and Project Manager get a copy of this book. It provides the actual techniques that will make your life easier, your processes more documentable and your results more reliable. Buy two; one for you and for one of your most important stakeholders - or if you are like me, buy one for everyone in the office.

Fantastic resource!

I have purchased several other books about drawing recently, however this book is by far the best one I have come across. After reading it I am amazed at how many tips and techniques it contains that none of the other books felt like mentioning. Some of the many great areas of instruction this book covers are:

-Combining from several photo references

-Proper smudging and blending techniques (Even after reading three other books on drawing this is the FIRST one that actually teaches exactly how to do this properly)

-Erasing techniques to enhance your drawings

-Using custom and self-made templates

-The art of measuring

-Enlarging photos

-Measuring curved surfaces

-Using a proportional divider

-Optical indexing

-Compare by tracing

And a lot more! All this and more is just found in the first half of the book. Most of the rest of the book covers specific details with drawing faces and portraits. The problem I have noticed when deciding which book to purchase here is that almost all of them have stellar reviews. This book is far better than any of the other "five starred" drawing books I have found on Amazon. It is perfect for someone that already knows the basics of drawing and can draw fairly decently but who doesn't know very much about how great pencil artists manage to create such awesome drawings.

My other five star rated drawing books are now collecting dust, but this book is rapidly collecting tattered corners from me using it so much. If you are a complete beginner to drawing buy a book like "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", if you are already a great pencil artist and want to polish your skills even greater buy a book like "Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil", if you are anywhere in between these two extremes with drawing BUY THIS BOOK.

This book is wonderful. I grew up drawing stick figures. With Carrie and Rick's techniques, I have been able to draw faces of my family that actually look like the people. This book is chock full of techniques and helps. When I say that Carrie could teach a rock to draw, I mean that she and Rick do not teach anyone how to draw, they teach people how to SEE...and when you actually see what you are looking at, then you can draw it.

The book also teaches techniques for overcoming the patterns we all have in our heads...the round happy face, the stick arms, all the things that we get stuck on. Good, but Biggest isn't always the best

This book is good and the author is great at teaching drawing using book lessons, better than some of the classes I've taken. But this book is more of an overview of the different types of subjects, not too detailed in any one area. If you want really good thorough lessons, try their specific subjects -- I suggest "Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces."

If you're looking for diversified, non-detailed info on most drawing subjeccts, this is good book for that. It covers just about everything, generally.
