Great children's concept book

I bought two of these books. One to keep and one for my son's preschool. It is a cute story and really helps small children picture quantity. The poster at the end will amaze the parents as well.

Cute book lets kids see what a million of something really looks like

I read A Million Dots and was so disappointed that you have to go through the entire book to see all million of them. How Big is a Million is the beautifully illustrated story of a little penguin who wants to see for himself what a million of something looks like. So he goes on a little adventure: first his mom catches 10 fish for breakfast, then he finds 100 penguins huddled together, then there is a lovely two-page spread with 1,000 snowflakes. But still, he hasn't seen a million. So he goes back home, a bit dejected, and then his mother has him look up in the sky where he sees 1 million stars. And there they all are, on a gigantic poster tucked into a pocket in the back of the book. One day we'll put it on the wall where the boys can look at them all easily as the poster is much too big to hold in your lap.

There really are 1,000,000 stars on the poster

Never too early to start kids on math! And this is a great one. The topic is "orders of magnitude", though it's not called that of course. 10, 100, 1000 are each an order of magnitude apart, and 1,000,000 is three orders of magnitude above 1,000; presuming we're counting in base 10, which is a safe assumption for pre-schoolers!

This is an important skill because it's the precursor to exponential thinking. I.e. 10^1, 10^2, 10^3, and 10^7. Some things are so astronomically small, such as quantum particles, and so astronomically large, such as distances in the universe, that order-of-magnitude or exponential thinking becomes a critical skill. What does a quantum particle "feel like" in terms of its size? What does the distance to the farthest known galaxy "feel like". When numbers are this small/large, intuition has to take over--and this book starts providing that intuition at a pre-school level.

Oh, nerd alert in case you missed it: I have a masters in computer science and work as a data scientist for a Fortune 200 company. Back to topic...

Another reviewer noted the poster does not have 1,000,000 stars. Actually it does. Consider: It measures 36" by 54". That is 1,944 square inches. The chart is so dense that the best you can count without too much effort is a square quarter inch. A square quarter inch has about 33 stars. There are 16 square quarter inches per square inch, by definition, for 528 stars per square inch. 528 times 1,944 is 1,026,432 which approximately equals one million stars. QED!!!

Math rocks! Love this book. Every kid should have it.

A coming-of-age debut novel movingly limns young gay love in the racially charged setting of a Massachusetts small town. High-school senior Eric Fitzpatrick is bright, college-bound, and different from his working-class Irish-Italian family and peers. Not just intellectually but emotionally different--he's a notorious weeper, and also, as he's beginning to realize, gay. Just before the school year starts, he meets Brooks Francis Tremont, a rich, sophisticated, black student at snotty St. Banners, a nearby boarding school. The two young men, initially wary--class is as much a problem for them as race--are increasingly drawn to each other and soon sexually involved. As the relationship continues, Eric, a loving son and brother, must also cope with varying crises that involve his ailing grandmother, his Down's syndrome younger sister, and his older sister, now pregnant but unmarried. His relationship with Brooks is further tried by the racism that breaks out when a young girl is found murdered. The townspeople blame inner-city blacks and Puerto Ricans: A young Hispanic is beaten to death, riots break out, and Brooks inevitably gets caught up in it all. Never an entirely credible character, he drops out of school when the rich aunt who has been his guardian dies, and he makes plans to live in Paris. Despite his love for Brooks, Eric is still the straight arrow, the local hero with a Yale scholarship, who doesn't want his family to know about his sexuality and who won't run off to Paris. A melodramatic incident at graduation, however, forces him to ``come out'' at last, hurting his family but providing a requisite (if flat) conclusion. If you liked GETTING OFF CLEAN, check out THE BREEDERS BOX

Just a note: GETTING OFF CLEAN author Tim Murphy has another novel called THE BREEDERS BOX, thus far only published in the U.K., but you can get it at amazon.co.uk (or just hit the UK site link at the bottom of this page). The setting changes from a small Massachusetts town to glamorous downtown New York City at the end of the decadent 1980s, but the same great characters, fast pace and bighearted sarcasm are there...but the lovably foul-mouthed older sister in GETTING OFF CLEAN has been supplanted by an even more memorable one who's kind of like a cross between Holly Golightly and Parker Posey in PARTY GIRL...this is another Murphy page-turner with a mindblowing finale!

A great novel about escapism and discrimination

A very well written book about the experiences of a highschool student living in a small town in the north of the US, where racial tensions are strong and where it is a rough environment to come out of the closet. Eric, the main character, lives in a very closed-minded family, with its own internal problems, and feels stuck. The only thing he really wants is to get out. The whole novel seems to be about this general idea: escapism. How to get out of this closed-minded town, with its hypocratic political attitudes - e.g. the assembly of people in the church after a rising of racial tendencies - and its strong conventional morals. The character Eric falls in love with, Brooks, an upper class black highschool student, is doing that all his life: escaping ... getting dropped out of school every time. And his family is not much different, with his father moving away from him and his mother to the warm south and his mother leaving him to go to Europe and get out of America. The whole affair between Eric and Brooks seems to be on the edge of loosing themselves in their romance and longing to escape. Eric, who is deeply 'grounded' in his family and environment can handle more easily then Brooks, who is alone on the world, and too smart not to take his ideas in its full consequences, and who almost loses it. I really loved reading this book and I was very touched. Probably because 'escapism' is a feeling I can too well understand. The book is much more about that - the breathless space of the own environment and the dreams of getting away - then it is purely about homosexuality or coming out. The end was a slight disappointment to me, since it ends too 'glorious', as seems to be typical at least for American movies. A must to read for anyone who wants to read about the other side of American moral values ...

A superb page-turner, a promising new voice

Getting Off Clean, a well-paced, compulsively readable debut novel, marks the emergence of Timothy Murphy as a distinctly original voice. Opening in West Mendhem, Mass. during the mid-'80s, the story centers around the relationship between Eric Fitzpatrick (an overachieving high-school senior desperate to escape the suffocation and provincialism of familial burdens and small-town life) and Brooks Jefferson Tremont (a scabrously witty prep-school student reeling from the aftermath of death and emotional abandonment.) They couldn't be more mismatched: Eric is white, a closet case, maddeningly apologetic, at once disdainful of his family and his classmates and in need of their praise and support. Brooks is black, lacking any true sense of family, sophisticated in the manners and culture of the upper class and yet disenfranchised in a school and a society that regards him with suspicion.
The resulting narrative spins wildly through the months they share an illicit affair against the backdrop of murder, xenophobia, white flight, and guilty-liberal gladhanding. At times, such as when Eric is relating a dream bacchanalia near the end of the story, Murphy delivers lush, lyrical prose that exposes truth at the tattered edges of his protagonist's weary psyche. And the scene where Eric instinctively turns away from a poster of a muscle man will have any gay man who was ever in the closet smiling in recognition.
That said, the novel does have several marked flaws. The dialogue is often forced and thus incapable of revealing internal truths about the characters (this is especially true of the supporting characters who lack either the story time or the from-the-viewpoint-of narration Eric gets.) And the third act of the book is marred by tidy resolutions of two key subplots. But Getting Off Clean's most damning flaw is in the author's inability to raise Brooks above a type. It is commendable of the author to deal with race and how it colors people's responses to crime; the scene in the church is a brilliant satire of liberal arrogance. But in the larger context of the story his insights are not original and his treatment of Brooks is insulting. The author also misses a golden oppurtunity to explore racism within the gay community, a rampant and largely-ignored community ill.
In the end, what is on the page is a singular and heart-wrenching account of two boys attempting to come to terms with their sexuality, their lives and their future that will keep you unable to close the book and hoping against hope that, somehow, these two will make it out together when nearly everything suggests they won't.

This book is excelent because there's reviews of calculus, linear algebra and all sort of classical numerical methods needed to understand the finite element method. Moreover, the authors try and succed in giving a clear explanation of many applications of the method.

Great book to learn the fundamentals of finite element methods (FEM). The authors combine both rigor and simplicity in their presentation of the FEM as a means of numerically solving a wide variety of partial differential equations. Highly recommended for engineers--especially those who have been taught FEM using the traditional "structural mechanics" approach.

Je crois que mon etoile m'a donne un don, celui de dessiner et de peindre, je crois egalement qu'elle m a offert en prime la chance de decouvrir un merveilleux pays : le Maroc. Loin de la magnificence des palais arabo-andalous, proche des atmospheres orientales, j'ai trouve aupres de gens simples, dans des decors de terre, dans l'agitation des ports et des souks, ce qui symbolisait mes racines propres avec un retour en arriere d'un demi-siecle. Et vite, depuis une trentaine d 'annes, je m'empresse de traduire sur papier ce qui, j'en suis certain, s'estompera ineluctablement au fil des temps, car nous autres, Bretons du bout du monde, sommes aussi passes par-la .

About the Author
CHARLES KERIVEL est ne en 1939 a Douarnenez (Finistere). Tres tot, le dessin et la peinture le passionnent. A 12 ans, il commence a  peindre dans la nature, imitant en cela les nombreux peintres de plein vent de l'epoque. Tous ses loisirs sont consacres a  cette passion qui l'aidera plus tard dans sa profession. A 16 ans, il embarque en qualite de mousse sur un bateau de peche, l'Aventurier. Suivront plusieurs annees dans la marine marchande qui lui feront decouvrir de nombreuses regions du monde : Moyen-Orient, les trois Ameriques et les cotes d Afrique. Vingt-sept mois de service militaire en Algerie le mettent en contact avec un maquettiste publicitaire. Les connaissances graphiques acquises aupres de celui-ci lui permettront d'entrer dans le milieu de l'imprimerie et, tout naturellement, dans celui de la publicite ensuite, en qualite de directeur artistique dans de nombreuses agences de l'Ouest, jusqu'a sa retraite en 1994. Entre-temps, il edite a compte d'auteur trois bandes dessinees (1978, 1980 et 2000) qui remporteront un franc succes regional. L'une d elle sera adaptee au theare et se jouera chaque fois a guichet ferme. Il assure les illustrations de nombreuses editions de recueils d'histoires bretonnes, ainsi que l'illustration journaliere des generiques de l'emission Midi Premiere (presentee par Daniele Gilbert dans les annees 1980). Il sera intervenant a Supdeco Brest dans la section Publicite durant quinze ans. Il effectue de nombreux voyages en Turquie, Egypte, Israel, Tunisie, au Senegal, et surtout au Maroc dont il rapporte de nombreux carnets de croquis et des aquarelles. Le Maroc sera sa terre d'election et, depuis 1983, il y retourne chaque annee. Il expose a Marrakech et en Bretagne des paysages et des personnages a connotation orientaliste, theme qu il affectionne particulierement. Plusieurs editions sont a  mettre a son actif, en particulier : ESSAOUIRA, Cite heureuse, aux editions ACR, avec reproduction de 60 de ses aquarelles ; DU RIS AUX SABLES, aux editions Le Telegramme-Sud Ouest, ouvrage entierement illustre de dessins et d'aquarelles sur le pays de Douarnenez ; LE GRAND SUD MAROCAIN, edite par Gallimard dans la serie des carnets de voyage. Par ailleurs, il fournit de nombreuses illustrations aux journaux locaux et participe en qualite d'invite d'honneur aux Salons de peinture regionaux. Ses dernieres expositions ont eu lieu en 2008 a la galerie Regard a Brest et en 2009 a la villa Meriadec a Douarnenez. Depuis 1999, il organise de nombreux circuits-aquarelle pour les amateurs de peinture dans ce pays superbe et attachant qu'il affectionne tout particulierement : LE MAROC.

What a wonderful way to explore so much of Morocco with these beautiful watercolors.
I love the book and having just returned from a trip to Morocco, I love all the paintings which

Nobody paints Morocco like Charles Kérivel. Just Beautiful.

My partner bought this book for my birthday gift in May this year from the amazon UK site and I have been thrilled to bits with it ever since. I browse through this book often, because the work of Charles Kérivel is just so beautiful. A modern-day Eugene Delacroix would be an appropriate summary of Charles' work. Highly recommended.
