TRUE MEANING OF A LADY

I loved this story with its mystery, suspense, deceit and secrets. Pierre Bernard needs the inheritance left from his late mother to save the family plantation, Willow, but there are stipulations, he must marry a French lady. Josephine Depardieu grew up in Massachusetts and after the death of both her parents worked as a seamstress at a factory, but when it burns down, she is left with nothing. Many of the other girls are applying to be mail order brides and she does too, answering the ad from Pierre, after all, she speaks French since her father was from France, but can she pull off being a French lady of society? Can Pierre save Willow by marrying Josephine and make it a marriage in name only? Can Josephine accept a loveless and name only marriage? Why is Willow in trouble financially? Will the truth come to light before it is too late? The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning. The dialog is witty and the characters heartwarming. This is a wonderful addition to the American Mail-Order Brides series. Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

A wonderful story. I loved Josephine willingness to help save a home she though she did not belong. She was quite the definition of a lady if not truly French. Thrown in a thief and some well placed lies and Mrs. Caldwell has written a winner well worth your time.

Not good...

Where to start? Let's start with the smaller issues. Some typos and spelling mistakes, as well as whole sentences repeated in following paragraph. Hero and heroine have the same last name the first time their last names are mentioned at the beginning of the book; then the hero's last name is changed to a different last name…
Badly in need of editing.

More serious: poor writing. There's not that much to the story; elements of the storyline seem inflated to look more important than they actually are and fluff out the story. Even the reason for the hero having to marry a French lady is unclear and just doesn't make much sense (even more so at the end of the book). Silly story, silly characters with unlikely reactions. The characters' behavior is often inconsistent and doesn't make much sense. A few examples:
***Some spoilers***
• The hero is not very appealing at first. He appears uncaring, insensitive and self-centered, and shows a lack of consideration and respect for the heroine. For example, he does not even bother to pick her up himself, sends his cousin instead. He talks about sending her back, like one would a package, before even meeting her. But then he's very nice to her once he meets her.
• The biggest sore point in my opinion: the hero closed his heart to love and marriage because it hurt too much when his mother died (seriously?!!) although he was so young when she passed away that he barely remembers her. So he's decided he wants a marriage in name only, which means no children. Hard to believe for a person in his position who has a plantation to pass on to his heirs… He asked a woman to marry him without sharing that important bit of information? Unlikely! Heroine learns from the cousin that the marriage will be in name only, is saddened by that news and the prospect of not having any children but just accepts the situation without reconsidering marrying the hero, even though she still hasn't met him!
• The hero was raised in a household with at least one French parent and a French cook and yet doesn't like French cuisine. He reacts to cheese and sweet breads the same way most people react to chopped liver or snails! Again, unlikely!
• The villain comes to the heroine, tells her some lies and that the hero wants her to leave, and she just believes him, packs up and leaves, even though they shared an excellent evening that very night and the hero was overjoyed about their plans coming to fruition and the upcoming nuptials!

Incredible Study Bible for the Technology Guru!

So when I picked up this Bible in a Christian bookstore around Thanksgiving 2011, I knew I needed to own it someday. My iPhone 4S has a QR reader app on it and I immediately began playing around with it as I perused this Bible. The video links all work flawlessly and Dr. Gene Getz is a great speaker. He's not overly excitable or even eloquent, but he certainly gets the point across and uses real life illustrations to do so. Each of the 1,500 points scattered throughout the Bible are derived straight from Scripture as you read, and each verse that the point touches on is already highlighted for you, for focused study. The Bible even comes with a free Life Essentials QR scanning app that replaces a default QR scanner. This app includes ALL the video links by Bible Book already, in case you want to simply go through them chronologically or however you wish to study. The app works perfectly and even follows your progress by checking off videos you've already watched, and you can even tag your favorites as such for quick reference to find later.

Overall, this Bible has been an immense and valuable resource for my personal study, and my church's pastor even wants to take a look at it. Technology, when used properly, is an amazing tool for the Christian, and this Bible is leaps and bounds ahead of any other study Bible to date (which is difficult to admit because I have a growing collection of inspiring study Bibles).

Jon Atack nails it!

Jon Atack's latest book is quite mind blowing. I thought I understood a lot about manipulation but Jon has opened so many doors to understanding this complex subject by linking many organizations that use mind control techniques from cults to terrorist cells to salesmen and governments and exactly how they achieve it. I recommend everyone reads this,opening minds: the secret world of manipulation, undue influence and brainwashing especially victims of such devices and that is all of us.

I know that I can hardly be called an objective reviewer, but this subject is vitally important to our survival, particularly now, as news comes in from all over about violence perpetrated by extremists, leaving us all wondering just how it is that a human being can be led to do such horrible things - and how to stop it from happening again. Forget banning people from countries, forget dropping bombs on whole populations: that hasn't worked yet, and it will never work. In order to stop the violence, we need to look at why, and perhaps even more importantly, how.

In this important work, Jon not only exposes the levers and pulleys of social interaction, but proposes solid and thought-provoking solutions to how we might better work together to create a safer society, and how, by being responsible citizens, we can keep our public servants accountable and serving us - rather than the other way round. It's been an honor helping him put it together, and I hope it will lead to even more books on the same topic; only when we work together can we draw the sting of undue influence and make our world a better place to live.

Highly recommended.

While books have been been written about the many abuses of Scientology, only a very few have managed to de-construct the coercive nature and abusive undue influence that it exerts on it's adherents.
With honesty, courage and compassion, Jon Atack manages to peel back the superficial public layers of the Scientological onion to reveal the true dark aims of this totalitarian, destructive organization.
In our current era of ISIS and al Qaeda, it becomes more important than ever to understand the fanaticism that informs totalistic thought groups and the attraction of these groups.
John Atack's books offer the reader rare insights into the "prison of belief" that such groups construct.. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Katherine L. Adams is Professor of Speech Communication at California State University, Fresno, where she received a Meritorious Promise and Performance award in 1989. She has served as their Graduate Coordinator since 1989. She received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Utah under the direction of B. Aubrey Fisher. She has authored four instructor’s manuals in interpersonal and small group communication and most recently, this group communication book with Gloria Galanes. She has published articles in the areas of conversational analysis and interpersonal communication. Currently she is an associate editor for Communication Reports and The Western Journal of Communication. She participates, at all levels, in the Western States Communication Association and Speech Communication Association and teaches in the areas of interpersonal communication, communication theory, small group communication, and research methods.

Gloria J. Galanes is Associate Professor of Communication and Mass Media at Southwest Missouri St. University and has received the University’s Faculty Excellence in Teaching and the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member awards.

Nothing against Amazon for renting, but the authors made pure fire kindle. I just wish I had a fireplace, and that it wasn't a rental.
Great book if you're suffering from insomnia, or are looking for something similar to watching grass grow, or paint drying.

Uno de los mejores libros que he visto en español sobre técnicas de memorización. Contiene información muy útil y abarcadora sobre diversas técnicas disponibles, y es muy práctico. En lo particular me gusta mucho la forma en la cual esta organizado y explicado. El autor explica de manera clara cada técnica, dedicando un capítulo completo a cada una y ofreciendo ejemplos de aplicación. Al final de cada capítulo platea retos en los cuales tienes la oportunidad de aplicar la técnica expuesta en dicha sección.
Excelente libro para aquellas personas que buscan una referencia clara y práctica para mejorar sus destrezas de memorización. Mis felicitaciones al autor por crear este magnífico recurso.

Muy buen libro para mejorar la memorización, aplicado a multitud de situaciones reales, donde el autor nos brinda su dilatada experiencia en el tema mediante consejos, técnicas y herramientas. Personalmente debo decir que hay partes del libro que para mi situación actual no me han resultado especialmente interesantes pero es bueno conocerlas puesto que si en el futuro surge la necesidad se pueden trabajar y profundizar. Sin embargo hay otras partes que me han encantado y me están resultando realmente utiles y además me han ayudado a abrir mi mente a nuevas posibilidades y a ir diseñando nuevas herramientas personalizadas adecuadas a mis necesidades con excelentes resultados, por todo ello van las 5 estrellas. Añadir que también he leído con anterioridad el libro de Ramon Campallo, Una mente prodigiosa, pero me ha resultado algo más útil este, debido a que en mi opinión tiene una temática algo mas amplia y con más posibilidades de aplicación practica. Por último decir que no hay recetas maravillosas en esto lo primero es dedicar tiempo y esfuerzo para que con los sistemas adecuados rentabilizar al máximo.
