About the Author
Susan Colley is the Andrew and Pauline Delaney Professor of Mathematics at Oberlin College and currently Chair of the Department, having also previously served as Chair. She received S.B. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology prior to joining the faculty at Oberlin in 1983. Her research focuses on enumerative problems in algebraic geometry, particularly concerning multiple-point singularities and higher-order contact of plane curves. Professor Colley has published papers on algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, as well as articles on other mathematical subjects. She has lectured internationally on her research and has taught a wide range of subjects in undergraduate mathematics. Professor Colley is a member of several professional and honorary societies, including the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.

It's a very good book for what it does

I went through most of this text during a 1 quarter vector calculus course aimed at second and third year (US) math and physics undergrads. This book provides a reasonable mid-point between a standard calculus course where calculations are the main thrust of the course, and an analysis course where justifications are the main thrust of the course. This book does not include complete proofs for some of the more technical theorems, but it always includes proofs when the proof is helpful in understanding the theorem. This book also includes a gentle introduction to differential forms, which is very nice.

The aspect of this book that I appreciate the most is that it tries to provide very clear geometric and physical interpretations of the various standard vector calculus theorems. For whatever reason, this is unusual, which is sad. This approach makes these theorems much more accessible to an audience that is more comfortable with envisioning physical systems than with mathematical proof.

very good entry book for science/engineering students

I like this book very much. I took multivariable with the famous Thomas' calculus volume 2 at high school (it was used at Princeton University freshman class, and MIT freshman class). I now take a freshman calculus 2 course with this book. The level is not so much different from Thomas'. Just a bit in more theory oriented discussions. But the book is very well written, and in many respect very similar in tone and style to Thomas'. I am happy to "repeat" multivariable calculus with a minor level-up since I did not wish to jump into real analysis outright. I do not intend to major in math, and for me this is the right level. I also looked upon Buck's advanced calculus book, and it was visibly higher level in theory. I am not sure if I should go through Buck's book after this though since the differential form notation is introduced in the last chapter. I also liked chapter 7, which prepares me for multivariable-based physics 2 (E&M) course I will be taking next semester. The problems seem to be more calculation oriented (at the similar level as Thomas'), but the text discussions are more theory inclined (rather than theory oriented). Overall, I highly recommend this book to students whose background and motivation is like me (science/engineering major student).

Superlative

This book covers all the standard vector calculus material. What sets it apart is the pedagogic skill of the author. It is very carefully written and motivated, with clear worked examples for each new concept. A student could work through this book independently.

The author has included a brief section on differential forms in the last chapter and she presents Stokes' theorem in the language of forms. This is a modern formulation and she is to be praised for doing this. It is possible to move from this book on to modern texts on manifolds and differential geometry (such as the books by John Lee and Barrett O'Neill, for example).

Elizabeth was Accused Indeed!

Jennifer Joy has done it again! I think this is her best book yet. I laughed many times at the scenes she created. The pig is a great comic relief. Once you have read this book, you will understand how the pig plays an important role.

I do enjoy reading JAFF tales. Your will still have your HEA. This one occurs almost entirely in Hunsford. Not all of the Pride and Prejudice characters make their appearance, but you can feel their presence.

A thoroughly, enjoyable read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet Pride and Prejudice variation. Definitely wanted this after reading an excerpt. This book has a bit of everything: laughter, tears, charm, and of course, Darcy and Elizabeth.

It's a bit different take on Darcy's failed proposal at Hunsford having some of Austen's words but is mostly a very different twist on her plot.

Great read done in one sitting. Oh, and you must find out about the pig. It's tie in to the story line is priceless. Good job, Jennifer. Look forward to your next book.

Whodunnit??

This starts with Darcy's poorly worded proposal to Elizabeth and their acrimonious exchange when she refuses him. The plot quickly diverges from Pride and Prejudice, as Colonel Fitzwilliam begs Darcy to remain at Rosings instead of leaving immediately, yet he won't give his reason for wanting to stay.

Not long after that, a pair of diamond earrings belonging to Anne de Bourgh are stolen. Things quickly get even more complicated as Lady Catherine, Darcy, Mr. Collins and Elizabeth each investigate the theft, all coming to different conclusions. Suspects include Elizabeth and Maria as well as Colonel Fitzwilliam. But maybe the earrings weren't stolen at all! Perhaps Lady C. is just using the missing earrings as an excuse to keep Darcy there longer so she has more time to badger him about marrying Anne! And who is the mysterious man hanging around Hunsford, and what is his business with Colonel Fitzwilliam? That's only one of several secrets surrounding Rosings and the personage, mostly things hidden from Lady C. for obvious reasons. Some are significant in terms of the missing earrings, while others are not.

This is an entertaining, well conceived, well written whodunit. Naturally, the romance between Darcy and Elizabeth is woven into the story, as well as various red herring theories about the thief and his or her motives. If you don't cheat and skip ahead to the big reveal scene, I challenge you to figure out who the actual perpetrator is. If you enjoy mysteries, this is a fun one.

Big picture but has its limitations

Firstly, this book is a little dated. This said, in some areas, it really was ahead of its time and will bring at least a few new ideas and concepts to the majority of coaches out there today.

The author clearly understands the science, the demands, and the culture of the sport. His writing style is is enjoyable, the book is logically laid out, and Dr. Verheijen has approached this topic with a wide lens that looks at the big picture of what is important rather than focusing on minor details.

This book, like much of Dr. Verheijen's work, has been translated from Dutch. Some of the specific scientific terminology has been "lost in translation" somewhat, but it is usually apparent what is meant when you look at the context of each discussion. The unfamiliar terms could prove to be more of a problem for those with less understanding of scientific principles.
I feel that this book is of best use for a football/soccer coach. Collegiate strength and conditioning coaches, for example, will find it helpful to further understand the demands of the sport, but may not be able to apply the majority of suggestions due to the constricts of college athletics. Also much of the ball-related conditioning presented could be ineffective at lower levels due to the technical ability needed to maintain the required intensity of work.

The main strength of this book is how Dr. Verheijen communicates the need to vary volume and intensity day to day, week to week, and phase to phase in all forms of training. This is a basic concept of periodization - something that he has since focused on in his research and presentations. It is really good to see basic (but very important) training principles applied to the sport as this is usually missed in soccer specific texts. Regarding periodization, Dr. Verheijen frequently refers to the Dutch professional model in which the season is split into two with a short break at Christmas. This leads me to recommend this text further to soccer coaches working at the collegiate level due to the similarities in year layout (fall season, Christmas break, spring season).

This book attempts to cover all practical areas of soccer conditioning and probably does so better than the majority of texts out there. Where it does fall short, however, is regarding strength and speed training. The author frequently states the importance of strength and speed in soccer. He also stresses that training the CNS is the key to improving these qualities, yet fails to communicate the role of gym based strength and power training in this process. Part of this is due to the age of the text, although one could argue there were far better strength training practices going on elsewhere in sports at the time than the machine based exercises illustrated here. Beyond that point, it is obvious that the author stands firm in his viewpoint that gym based gym strength training is not specific enough to improve the performance of soccer players beyond "general conditioning" early in the training year. His rational to this belief seems to be based on a limited understanding of what specificity actually is, and lack of knowledge regarding positive adaptations resulting from strength and power training. The Dutch & Scandinavian model typically does not embrace traditional strength training and so you may have to take advice from this book with a pinch of salt.

The abundance of photos showing poor / potentially dangerous athletic positions (valgus knees, rounded lumbar spine, etc.) concerns me, and reference sections are very "light". These issues and my criticisms of the strength portions are a shame because as a whole this may be a very helpful text to you, especially if used in conjunction with other specific speed and strength resources. The player and coach interviews are a refreshing change of pace, and the medical section at the end of the text, although possibly outside the sphere of "conditioning", is a nice touch. I wish that more US-based athletic trainers had the imagination to use late-stage rehab like the examples provided.

Update: Turns out Dr. Verheijen is not a Dr. at all - he did not finish his PhD at all and has falsely claimed to be one both for this book and also at his public presentations. This was not the fault of his publishers like he has since claimed (after being called out on this). He loses a lot of respect in my book due to this dishonesty.

We decided to buy this book to assist a Special Study Option about science and sports at the University of Ireland Galway.

Great Book!

This is just the book I wanted. Being as there were no reveiws, I wasn't sure, but decided to take a chance and order.

All the pasta meals I've ever made, I bought the box of pasta at the store. But now I want to make the pasta from scratch, and I wanted a book that shows how to do this.

This book is about 9 by 11 1/2, it has large color pictures, pictures of all the different types of pasta, with information about them, it shows all that one needs to begin making pasta. It has step by step pictured instructions on cooking and serving different types of pasta. It has step by step pictured instructions on making pasta from scratch. It has step by step pictured instructions on making pasta using a pasta machine, which is what I wanted, because I just bought a pasta machine.

It also has some recipes that sound pretty good, but I haven't tried any yet. It has sauce recipes, like fresh tomato sauce, and alfredo, there is info on herbs and spices and cheeses and so on.

All in all, I think its a very good book for someone like me who is starting from the beginning, the pictured instructions are great.

If someone already knows the basics of making pasta, then they may not be so thrilled with it, but with this book and Alton Brown's Good Eats episode of "Use Your Noodle", I think I'm already to begin making pasta.

Good Book to Start With

As a previous reviewer wrote, this is a good book for beginners. It covers the basic types and shapes of pasta, equipment needed for preparation, and a small section (12 pages out of 124) on making homemade pasta. About half of the book is devoted to recipes for cooking and serving pasta and there is one page on pairing pastas with wines. The book did include a number of pasta types and flavors not usually found in the average US book on pasta but that may have been because it is published by a London firm.
If you are looking for a book on making homemade pasta I recommend "Making Artisan Pasta: How to Make a World of Handmade Noodles, Stuffed Pasta, Dumplings, and More", by Aliza Green.
In summary, I would recommend this book to an inexperienced cook as a good place to start.

Oppenheimer works backward from Paris's maternal line, which stars a succession of pushy stage moms and gold diggers like her mother, Kathleen, a successful child model; he then moves on to her paternal line, featuring great-grandfather Conrad Hilton, a big-talking Catholic German from San Antonio, Tex., who made a name and a fortune buying hotels, eventually marrying the apocryphal Miss Hungary, Zsa Zsa Gabor. Like many children of the rich and famous, Paris Hilton didn't always get to spend quality time with her parents, especially her mother. A socially ambitious young woman, Kathleen Elizabeth Avanzino Richards Hilton, who had married into the celebrated Hilton Hotel family, was often out and about. With little time on her hands for mothering, she was cavalier about leaving her firstborn with the hired help or with relatives.

This was made abundantly clear to Patricia Skipworth Hilton, the first wife of Conrad Hilton's third son, Eric. A Texas beauty who had married into the Hilton family in her late teens, Pat, a mother of four, had become quite close over the years to her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Barron Hilton, parents of Kathy's husband, Rick. The second of Conrad's three sons, Barron had succeeded the Hilton patriarch as head of the international hotel empire. Pat adored Marilyn, a former cheerleader who herself was a gorgeous teenage bride when she became part of the Hilton family. (The Hilton men, from Conrad on down, were known for taking young'uns for their brides.)

Whenever Pat visited Los Angeles from her home in Houston, Marilyn insisted that she stay at their spectacular estate. It was during one of those occasions, when Pat was "in the throes" of one of her many divorce actions in what was a hellish marriage to Eric Hilton--hellish marriages not being an oddity in the Hilton dynasty--that she observed new mother Kathy Hilton in action.

"I was there talking with Marilyn when here comes Kathy with Paris, who was nine months old and a great big, fat, pretty baby," Pat Hilton says in her Lone Star State drawl. "Kathy said, 'Meet Star'--she called Paris 'Star' from day one--'Would you like to hold her for a minute?' That was the last I saw Kathy that day. She took off until that evening. I wanted to kill her! She didn't leave any instructions on what time Paris had to be fed. There weren't any diapers. She just left me in the lurch."

Furious, Pat vented to Marilyn, who listened sympathetically and knowingly, and rolled her eyes. "Marilyn said, laughing, 'Well, I guess you're it for the day. Kathy does this all the time. She just wants to go out. And she knew you'd take care of the kid.'"

When Kathy finally reappeared at day's end, Pat confronted her. "How dare you do this to me?" According to Pat, "Kathy's only reply was, 'Oh, I had to be somewhere. I didn't think you'd mind.' I warned her, 'Never, ever do this to me again!' But it didn't bother her at all. Kathy Hilton's very selfish and very spoiled and very self-centered, and that absolutely carries through to Paris."

When Rick and Kathy Hilton traveled and deigned to bring Paris along, they naturally stayed in Hilton hotels, where they demanded special services, including babysitting care for their daughter, despite the fact that Barron Hilton had a strict rule barring Hiltons from getting special treatment or favorable room rates.

"When they were in New York, and Paris was just an infant, Kathy and Rick would get one of the women from housekeeping at the New York Hilton to babysit for them," states a Hilton Hotels insider. "They would leave Paris on Friday and not come back for her until late Sunday. It was a known fact that Kathy and Rick liked to party, and when Kathy was a young mother she had no qualms about flaunting the Hilton name and taking advantage of it. She'd let it be known that Rick was going to be 'the next Mr. Hilton,' so hotel executives were afraid to argue with her. None of Barron's [eight] kids were getting a free ride. The only one who ever took advantage was Kathy."

Kathy and Rick were prone to show up out of the blue without reservations at a Hilton hotel on a busy weekend and demand the best suite in the house, fine wine and food, and babysitting for Paris. One of their targets was the Hilton in Parsippany, New Jersey, which had a four-star restaurant and a hip discotheque. The hotel also housed a number of lavishly furnished suites leased by big corporations.

When Paris was just a toddler, Rick and Kathy appeared on a busy Friday with her in tow along with their two small dogs (which weren't permitted in the hotel unless they were Seeing Eye dogs). Though the hotel was fully booked, they made it clear they were Hiltons and wanted VIP treatment--the best suite, complimentary food, and a babysitter because Paris's parents wanted to spend the night boogying in the disco. The manager, who didn't want to get in hot water with members of the ruling family, broke the ironclad no-special-treatment rule and put them in a suite, vacant for the weekend, that was leased by the pharmaceutical company Warner-Lambert.

"I thought, 'What the hell, they're going to leave on Sunday so it will work out,'" he says. "But no sooner do I get back to my office, I get a call from Rick Hilton who says, 'It's customary that we get a welcoming amenity.' I told him, 'Oh, absolutely.' Then he says, 'We like a nice California red wine and something white, and my wife likes seafood.' And then he demanded a babysitter. I had to convince the hotel's elderly German seamstress to do the sitting."

The manager felt relieved when the Hiltons checked out Sunday night, because Warner-Lambert people were coming in the next morning. But then he got a call to return to the hotel posthaste because there was a major crisis.

"I go up to the suite the Hiltons were using, and there's dog shit and dog piss all over the place--I mean everywhere. They didn't walk their dogs for the entire weekend. It was a real nightmare. We ended up having housekeeping do a detailed, deep cleaning. After all that, I never heard a word from Rick or Kathy Hilton--never got a thank-you, nothing. But that's where their mind-set is. They act like the imperial court."

Kathy and Rick also threw their weight around at the Las Vegas Hilton, another place where they liked to party, and where Paris was spotted as a little girl wearing mascara and eyeliner painted on by her mother. (By then, Kathy was booking Paris into charity event fashion shows.) The Hiltons, including Paris and her sister, Nicky, quickly earned a reputation at the Sin City Hilton for "arrogance, threats, and intimidation," according to a number of present and former employees, such as Margaret Mary (Peggy) Cusack Yakovlev, who also served as a personal assistant to Eric Hilton and his second wife, Bibi.

"Kathy and Rick and the girls looked down their noses at the help and were very judgmental," states Yakovlev. "Paris and Nicky were running loose in the hotel, were always trouble, and the mother always seemed to be coaching them." She notes that the Hilton sisters usually were accompanied by hired help who looked like they were treated despicably.

When Paris and Nicky informed hotel employees who they were, the workers ran the other way. The philosophy was--if you run into Rick and Kathy or their daughters, just keep your head down and your mouth shut. "Kathy was absolutely pushy, arrogant, condescending, and presumptuous, and Paris picked that up from her," observes Yakovlev. "The spotlight always had to be on Kathy. It was always, 'Do you know who we are?' 'Do you know who I am?' Rick was usually like a bump on a log. He had a look on his face like he was taking a bowel movement."

However, Yakovlev remembers an incident in which Paris's father was shockingly outspoken. It happened some weeks after Kathy Hilton gave birth to one of their two sons, Conrad and Barron. Rick Hilton was smoking a celebratory cigar outside the main entrance of the Las Vegas Hilton's crowded celebrity showroom. Yakovlev, who was standing nearby, overheard another Hilton employee congratulating the proud father on having such a large and handsome brood. "She asked him what he attributed it to," says Yakovlev, "and he said, loud enough for anyone to hear, 'I like to fuck!' Guests were passing by and heard it and looked at him. I couldn't believe it." (Some detractors felt that Rick and Kathy did not measure up to the proud Hilton name. One, who personally knew the family, even put his feelings into print. Taki Theodoracopoulos, a controversial figure who wrote the "High Life" column for Britain's respected Spectator magazine, declared in a column that Kathy and Rick "are straight out of The Beverly Hillbillies." He claimed, "They eat hamburgers covered with ketchup washed down with Chateau Latour." He called Rick "a hick . . . as thick as they come," and proclaimed that neither Rick nor Kathy would ever "win the Parenting of the Year award.")

When Paris was about twelve and still on the innocent side, she had pet ferrets that she carried in her Prada purse. The cute little rodents accompanied her everywhere she went in the hotel, which caused headaches for the Hilton managers, who were afraid to challenge her for fear of her mother's wrath.

On one occasion, Yakovlev recalls, Paris and her sister showed up at the glitzy hotel showroom where the big acts entertained audiences of thirteen hundred at each performance. "The girls brought the ferrets in with them and Rick and Kathy didn't care. They could not see any further ahead than what their children wanted, while we were responsible for the safety of the guests. We did not want those little rodents escaping and rubbing up against customers' ankles."

One of the managers with gumption decided to confront the Hiltons. "You need to get your girls and your rodents out of here," he told the Hiltons. "They're not coming in. I am not allowing them."

Kathy Hilton put her hands on her hips and got in his face and said, "Well, their grandfather [Barron] will certainly hear about this! Their grandfather is going to know from me how you are treating his granddaughters." The manager's businesslike but emphatic response was, "You ...

My feedback is short and to the point. This is such a great book. Big Kathy little kathy, Paris. Like selfish gypsys throwing money around. If anyone knows any other books that disclose this much secret information please put them I'n a review so I can read them.
