This conflict, which has broken out in 64/683 after the death of the Umayyad caliph Yazid I, involved the rival claims of the Umayyads (centered in Syria) and the Zubayrids (centered in the Hijaz), each of whom claimed the caliphal title, Commander of the Faithful. Both parties contented for control of Iraq, which was also the setting for al-Mukhtar's Schi'ite uprising in al-Kufah during 66/685 and 67/686. Kharijite groups were active in south-western Iran and central Arabia, even threatening the heavily settled lands of Iraq. By the end of 73/692, the Umayyad regime in Damascus, led by Abd-al-Malik, had extinguished the rival caliphate of Ibn al-Zubayr and had reestablished a single, more or less universally acknowledged political authority for the Islamic community.

Al-Tabari's account of these years is drawn from such earlier historians as Abu Mikhnaf, al-Mada'ini, and al-Waqidi and includes eyewitness accounts, quotations from poems, and texts of sermons. Notable episodes include al-Mukhtar's slaying of those who had been involved in the death of al-Husayn at Karbala, the death of al-Mukhtar at the hands of Mus'ab b. al-Zubayr, the revolt of Amr b. Sa'id in Damascus, the death of Mus'ab at the Battle of Dayr al-Jathaliq, and al-Hajjaj's siege and conquest of Mecca on behalf of Abd-al-Malik. There are excursuses on the chair that al-Mukhtar venerated as a relic of Ali, the biography of the colorful brigand Ubaydallah b. al-Hurr, and the development of the secretarial office in Islam.

Foster nailed it

Richard Foster delivered a manual for the undisciplined that is unrivaled. All three sections (Money, Sex, and Power) have tremendous advice for how to live a more disciplined life. Through citing such theologians as CS Lewis and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Foster gains my academic trust. Foster remains objective and tries to take his lessons straight from the Bible. I highly recommend reading this book. A short read that is well worth your time.

Money Sex and Power

This book was written to show how Money Sex and Power affect all of us. It is written from a Christian perspective and has very intriguing ideas and interesting thoughts about how we are all affected by these seductive elements in our lives. This book points out the dangers of these gifts from God, if they become out of balance in our lives, if too much importance is placed on them and it shows how each of these things can be very beneficial and beautiful if used properly. This book was very informative and well written. There is a lot of good information here and I plan on reading this book again, and again because it is hard to absorb and utilize all these great ideas in one sitting. This will be a well used reference book on my bookself!

engaging and enlightening

"The Challenge of the Disciplined Life" by Richard Foster is a very good book. Foster writes about how modern Christians can face the temptations of money, sex and power in the modern world. Foster proposes the use of the spiritual disciplines as weapons in this battle. As with all of Foster's other books, this one is very well written. Foster is the master of engaging his readers; all the while enlightening them. I recommend this wonderful book for everyone walking the path of the Spiritual journey.

Great Summary of Egyptian Funerary Customs through Time

"Burial Customs in Ancient Egypt", by Wolfram Grajetzki, is a really good overview of Ancient Egyptian funerary customs from the Pre-dynastic Period through to the Roman era.

The author has taken one or more archaeological excavations from each period of Egyptian history and described the coffins, sarcophagi and other objects found in them in detail. Then the author points out how the material in these excavations is similar to or different from other burials of the time. Among the topics covered are:

1) Old Kingdom burials in the Giza mastabas
2) Regional differences in the burials of the First Intermediate Period
3) The Middle Kingdom tombs found at Dier el-Bersheh
4) The tomb of King Awibre Hor (Dynasty Thirteen)
5) Burials at Tell el-Daba (the Hyksos Period)
6) Tomb architecture and coffin development in Thebes during the New Kingdom
7) The royal burials at Tanis

The book's emphasis is on the burials of the nobility and the commoners, and does not spend as much time on royal burials as other books on this topic do. The result is a succinct and very informative view of how funeral customs changed over time in Egypt.

The book is a slim volume (only 161 pages) and is a bit pricy for its size, but is loaded with fascinating information and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone interested in this topic.

Covering overlooked aspects of the topic

The burials of the poor tend to be neglected in Egyptology, and Grajetzki obviously wants to counteract that tendency. At one point he says outright that we don't know enough about poor Middle Kingdom burials because archaeologists tend to ignore them. The book is arranged chronologically, and each chapter has a section on the poor graves from the time period. Grajetzki also discusses atypical types of burial, and other subjects that other books tend to overlook, like burials in Nubia. He nevertheless devotes more space to wealthy tombs than to common graves, simply because there's less to say about a pit with a mummy and a few objects in it than about an elaborately decorated tomb.

The book is rather short, lacking the extensive detail found in more lavishly produced books for popular consumption, and apparently it includes some errors. Most notably, Grajetzki says the poorest people had no burial goods, but that is no longer considered to be true. Even so, it's an important complement to books that are more extensive overall but neglect the poor and the atypical.

Excellent resource

Excellent book on this topic. Most Egyptian history books concentrate on the tombs of royals, but this book reveals information of funerary traditons of the majority of the ancient population- the lower classes. Very interesting to compare the burial customs of the wealthy versus the poor people of ancient Egypt. This book Burial Customs in Ancient Egypt: Life in Death for Rich and Poor (Duckworth Egyptology Series)was a very helpful resource for writing research papers.

Simple, easy to understand but expensive for what you get

This book offers the most basic (and some selected not so basic) patterns such as the front and back bodice, the sleeve, and the skirt draft. If you are already familiar with fashion design, you know that from those 4 drafts, you can go on to produce anywhere from coats to pants.
The book is written in a clear and straight-to-the point manner; no confusing terms if you are, as I had mentioned, already familiar with fashion design. The diagrams are in black in white and are clearly labeled. The steps are laid out clearly and the instructions are very to-the-point. Another great feature about this book is that in it had black and white photos of the tools needed to make patterns, a must for those beginners who have no idea what a french curve looks like. There are also some brief but clear definitions and explanations to certain terms or phrases used in the book.
The only downside to this book is that it is expensive for what you get (By the way, that's the reason why I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5). The book is thinner than you'd expect... I'd say that it is less than 200 pages, probably even less. I myself was surprised despite the fact that I bought it used for [less]. I couldn't believe how thin it was. I was expecting a thick and heavy text book. Go figure.
Oh and another thing, the book also includes a neckline measuring device supposedly produced by the publisher. I'm not sure if that contributes to the price but if it does, I say "What!?" It's made out of plastic but works beautifully. Luckily, my used version came with one in tact.

Staple for designers

I am thrilled with this book. It is clear, concise, and thorough. I'm totally excited to make all the slopers to begin creating my own library of designs. Content-wise the only drawbacks is that it's mostly based on standard form sizes. They do give directions about how to measure the body and the drafting itself is pretty simply explained so either measurements can be used. Also, there aren't instructions about collars or cuffs or button/zipper extensions which, granted, are not really necessarily drafted by measurements. But you do need a supplemental Flat pattern making book for those items.

The only real cons I can tell are the publisher's fault - not the author's. The book is rather skinny for the price - I too was expecting a monster text. Should have known better - its a textbook right? so of course they gouge the student. Shameless really. On top of it, it is rather cheaply done - the pages look like photocopies!

Also, one reviewer mentioned that it came with the neckline tool - I didn't get one! Now I have to scour the internet to find a replacement because they don't have directions about how to draft a neckline. My only real annoyance.

An excellent resource!

My benefits included basic instructions regarding sleeve cap design, and detailed instruction on taking accurate measurements. I've added this book to my most available resources in my office, and refer to it frequently in the course of designing my own patterns and "fixing" commercially printed ones.

Should have been amazing !!!

From my knowledge of asapscience youtube channel. This book would surely be a hit. However it really is hard to shell out 2000 rupees for this book. I would rather advice you to split the book up into different parts, and thereby make it cheaper. Also its audiobook is not available in the Gulf. Which is very sad. Its pathetic to see that no one owning a kindle has bought this book. Gregory and Mitchel, keep in mind that you have subscribers from all over the world and you must cater to each one of them. Some are poor, and some are rich. But everyone wants to read a good book. Why is it that you can't get people to buy your book even though you have a minimum of 10,000 views for every video. Even if we say that only 5000 of them are loyal, its still a big number.
