Finally! A readable first year algebra text!

This book is a kinder, gentler approach to first year algebra. Harold Jacobs actually writes math texts that are fun to read.
The sequence of this book is a little different than most algebra books. Jacobs starts off with one of those "Think of a number" puzzles, and shows with diagrams how it works, and then translates it into algebraic notation. This is the point of algebra: How do you say with numbers what you can diagram? This leads quite naturally into Cartesian coordinates and a discussion of some basic functions. Exponents, polynomials, factoring and quadratic equations follows a full treatment of linear equations and systems.
I use this book with homeschooled students, because they can actually take it home and study it. The homework problems come in four sets. Set I is review problems. Set II applies to the lesson and has all the answers in the back of the book. Set III is similar to Set II problems, but does not have the answers in the book. Set IV is some logic puzzles and brain teasers for students who love math. Answers to sets other than Set II are in the teacher's guide to Elementary Algebra, along with some wonderful extra material and teaching suggestions. Amazon, why don't you carry the transparencies for this text?
I highly recommend both this and Harold Jacob's text on Geometry, a good, old-fashioned approach to Euclidean geometry and proofs. Enjoy! Really.

Outstanding math for visual learners

I began using this book to teach my own children after using Saxon Algebra I and II. I was amazed to discover that Jacobs covers ALL the algrbra from both Saxon Algrbra books in only one book and in much more simple language. (No Geometry is covered in Jacobs Algebra-- but Jacobs Geometry covers it more completely that Saxon.) Each lesson starts with a comic strip or interesting picture and builds the lesson on the comics. After one year with Jacobs my children understand how to find the formulas they need and why problems are solved the way the are. Problems that were complex with Saxon are explained simply and visually with Jacobs. Test scores are way up and math is fun again.

excellent results with a gifted ten-year-old

The question last summer was, "What next, for a younger child who's mastered all pre-algebra mathematics?" Was it too soon for algebra? And could a parent who hadn't seen algebra in the last twenty years help the child cope? We ordered Harold R. Jacobs' text, encouraged by reviews mentioning self-study, and began work in the fall, prepared to stop any time if the child found it difficult or stressful. Quite the contrary, it was mentally very stimulating -- the lessons took us carefully from familiar arithmetic concepts to equivalent algebraic content, and presented each new subject one very manageable bit at a time. It was exciting to watch skills developing, and to see the child's enjoyment and growing sense of competence. The little cartoons and often-intriguing Set IV exercises added fun and interest throughout, and made it easier to keep going, especially during those mid-school-year doldrums. This book was perfectly suited to our schedule, which allowed only three lessons per week, after school -- we needed only about half an hour per lesson at first, then near the end, about an hour and a half. We're looking forward to Jacobs' Geometry book next year!

I have always liked the idea of a human falling in love with a ghost, and I really enjoyed this unique take on this sort of romance. The scenes in this were a mixture of sweet and hot, and I was definitely a fan of Mr. Davenport by the time I finished.

A treasure to have!!!

This book made a huge impact in my life. I have read many Hindu scriptures before but never came across a book like this. This book with Sri Sri Ravishankar's commentary, made it so simple to understand. It just helped me to understand the art of living without getting stressed out, and some basic principles we can follow in order to succeed in fulfilling life's purpose, which is realizing the truth about ourselves and of this universe. This book truly helped me to have a shift in my consciousness . I realized that just praying and meditating is not enough and a deep understanding of life is necessary for spiritual growth. I would recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a ' special ' book, in which they can keep it in their book collection and go back again and again when they have a doubt in their mind. I have read many spiritual books. But this is one of the best books that I have ever read. Each time I read it , I find it more interesting with different meaning ! A must read , indeed!

What being a lawyer is really about

In Lawyers as Peacemakers, Kim uses her gifts of collection and connection to create and display a showcase of what being a lawyer is really about. For those that thought law school would be a great way to make a difference in the world but came out the other side unsure of how a J.D. really helps, this book is a must-read. For those who struggle to "balance" their fractured personal and professional selves, this book is a must-read. Kim has created a compendium, a hands-on guide, and, most importantly, a voice of acceptance for holistic law.

Lawyers as Peacemakers a MUST read!

Wright's Lawyers as Peacemakers is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, providing a wealth of ideas for everyone in ANY profession who yearns for a better, more compassionate world. Although this book targets the legal profession, everyone can understand it and apply the ideas to his or her own profession and personal life. Wright explains the essence of therapeutic jurisprudence, which is practicing law with the purpose of restoring and maintaining the well being of all the people involved, including the clients, the victims, the offenders, the lawyers, and the community. This book is NOT fluffy idealism. It provides very practical and doable solutions and techniques for problem solving and conflict resolution. It shows how we can all relate to each other in compassionate ways rather than adversarial. It explains the benefits of this approach, which in most situations enormously outweigh the benefits of the traditional win-lose adversarial approach. Wright does not preach. She shows exactly how a win-win outcome is accomplished. She has done her homework and reveals that this approach to doing business can actually be much more financially profitable than the traditional win-lose approach, in addition to improving the emotional and physical well being of all the people involved. It is one thing to say we should all care about each other, and another altogether to explain how to do it. Wright does the latter.

Meghan Genge's book is one of those rare finds that gathers the tenderest pieces of hope and wondering and brings them into the light where possibility is more than just a nice thought but a deep medicine. In the metaphors and the characters I have found some deeply moving ideas that have woken me up and helped me to lift into new ways of being in the world. I am not often moved to write reviews but I feel like tapping women in bookstores on the shoulder and telling them about this (in a non creepy way!) If you are looking for a book to shake you up lovingly then this might be it. I am buying copies for my friends and can't wait to talk to them about it.

Every woman should be the heroine of their own story

I was intrigued at the opportunity to read this given the introduction into the book and not fully knowing what to expect. I had an idea that it would contain some metaphysical elements but I didn't expect the story to expand as it did. I was hooked on Melissa's character and wished to know more. In many cases I felt that it was like the Matrix meets woman determined to be "awake" in a sleeping world. This book is the perfect read for anyone trying to find themselves on a path that seems to be all tangled. The imagery is so vivid I felt that I was along the ride for visual meditations while I was reading. Recommend highly ...

I rarely write reviews. This book required one.

I bought this book (Kindle version) on Friday morning upon hearing about it via a friend on Facebook. I was immediately intrigued because it reminded me, in some ways, of books like the Celestine Prophecy (and series) + The Alchemist. My intention was to only start on the book that morning because I had so much already planned for the day. Several hours later I looked up to realize that everything else had needed to wait, and in fact... I'd gone ahead and finished the book. It was worth it. There were times when, as I was reading, I thought "Well here's what this means, and here's where this is headed, I can see it coming a mile away!"... but I actually think that was the point. I think the author wanted to make sure that her points were received. They were for me. So much so, in fact, that I've decided to go ahead and launch a couple of offers that I'd been putting off due to fear. Fear of not being good enough, fear of being judged, fear that I wasn't ready. No more. Not only that, I'm finally feeling ready to heal some issues I have had around not feeling my feelings... about stuffing them down vs feeling them... about stuffing myself with food vs allowing myself what my soul really wants.

All this to say:

If you've seen it all and done it all and are still unhappy with your life... skip it. You're not ready.

if you're ready to see yourself, if you're ready for change (and not just platitudes), if you're ready to be open & accepting.... buy this book + read this book + start taking action = the change you'd like in your life.
