Great reference book for any repair

I bought this manual because I ran up a curb like an imbecile and put a nice size hole in my oil pan. The manual has great diagrams and was invaluable in replacing the oil pan. I am not a grease monkey by any means but with this manual by my side I was able to complete the repair without incident.

It would be useful for any repair seeing as it has thorough diagrams of nearly every part of the car. Do not buy this manual thinking you will be able to fix a blown head gasket or some other major mechanical malfunction using it as a reference book without any mechanical training. It is a service manual not an auto mechanic certification.

Overall a great piece of literature.

Ever older Passat Needs this.

2002 gls wagon, bought used and had so many gremlins that I finally broke down and picked up the Bentley. Everyone on the forums reccomends these and after receiving them I fould out why. So much information that they are like an encyclopedia for the car. Was helpful in troubleshooting an ignition problem, motor mount,. snub mount, axles and brake system problem. Yes.....all they typical VW passat issues. WOuld reccomend if you plan on keeping the car for a while. Have a high re-sale value so you can always sell them if your car ever dies :)

Good book! Very pricey.

There is a lot of good information in these books. Detailed photographs and exploded diagrams help with most replacement and repairs. It seems like in other manuals there is a lawyer disclaimer on every other page saying they do not take responsibility for breaking the car further or hurting you in the process. I get it. I am working on my own vehicle. It is great to turn the page, see the photograph matches what I am looking at. It shows manufacturer's part numbers and the proper name and the steps for removal and installation.

My only complaints have to do with the books themselves. They are expensive hard cover books. For the money, I don't want to get them dirty with oily hands or accidently rip the pages. They should be laminated to survive in the garage. They could also use colored tabs to find sections faster.

One Of THE BEST Guides

This is probably the SECOND definitive guide to growing marijuana indoors. Unlike most books which cover the absolute basics, this book covers a great deal of subjects, not everything you could imagine, but it is one of the best guides. For example this book has about 230 Pages, while most others have under 150. This book covers it all in a basic format, and will definately get you operational.
Another good book I recommend in addition to this is:
Indoor Marijuana Horticulture - The Indoor Bible
by Jorge Cervantes
These 2 books will have you covered if your goal is indoor cultivation. However Closet Cultivator and the original Marijuana Question? Ask Ed! book are good companions and will offer other techniques and styles and different ways to do things. It's best to have a few sources, read them all and then go with something along in the middle.

Good Solid Factual Info

Forget the bigger grow book names and get your hands on a copy of this very detailed and factual book. Like the other reviewers suggested this book contains information that is not dated and can not be found elsewhere. The writer has obviously put time and effort into the many essays on how to grow cannabis and in my opinion this is what causes the book to stand out over all the others. It is also short enough to be covered in the day or two and will benefit your grow. I like this book because it does not beat about the bush with pseudo second hand growing information. Besides the writer was once arrested for producing over £1 million worth of bud in a grow factory that he ran! How much more could you want?

Clear and concise guide for regular growers.

I've looked at a few of the grow books and this is one of the better ones. The author uses clear and concise language with just enough information to clearly show how to set up and then manage a garden. I liked the fact that the book did not feel artificially padded and the author focused on what you really need to know to grow. It was nice to see illustrations of all the different set ups and combined with the text it would be easy to adapt to your own personal space. If you're serious about growing then this book or one by Mel Frank, will set you on the right track.

The FX Option market has grown from humble beginnings in the 1980s to a global behemoth, with hundreds of billions of US dollars worth of flow going through it each trading day. With such size and liquidity, it is generally assumed to be efficient, with few profit opportunities. But astonishingly, this is not so. The authors have taken a completely different attitude to most option studies; instead of looking into the theory of how the products are valued and what they should be worth, they have gone back through the historical data to find out what they actually delivered compared to what they cost.

FX Option Performance thus offers a unique and practical guide to option trading and hedging. Written by Jessica James, Jonathan Fullwood and Peter Billington – who among them combine academic rigour with decades of option trading experience – this essential resource has the courage to report how much these contracts have really made or lost. This critical (and often overlooked) information gives investors and hedgers alike the edge they need to make more informed decisions. Carl Linnaeus' Summarizing Work on Botanical Taxonomy

Carl Linnaeus (1707 - 1778) is best known for his work on taxonomy of Animals, but he is also did massive work in the taxonomy of Botany and Minerals too. He used to say to himself "God creates, but Linnaeus names." and he saw himself as a person on a mission to establish the order of all creation from animals to plants to minerals. He was searching for a "Natural Method" whereby all things could be systematically named and classified. As he notes in this book, "If you do not know the names of things, the knowledge of them is lost also." His views of taxonomy (or arrangements) have impacted how we classify species of animals, plants, (and minerals?) to this day. He had to sort out through much of the systems of classifications in his day which were quite cluttered and not as simple or systematic as what he was able to establish. His work impacted many fields such as the biological sciences by providing a system where many could adequately research the diversity of life (even though he was a creationist), paleontology, anthropology, and other fields that use taxonomy to establish an systematic order of entities that constitute Nature.

The book at hand, "Philosophia Botanica", is a summarizing work on Botany and classification of plants. The introduction is very enthusiastic and informative on all his botanical works and refers to "Philosophia Botanica" as being like a set of lectures. One can think of it that way. The introduction also sheds light on his cultural heritage. He is one of the most beloved scientists in his native Sweden and was a very good lecturer. Actually, he is best known there for his work as a teacher, not as a botanist or taxonomist of animals. For sure there is much to learn from this book such as the history of botany and the history of taxonomy in general since he does discuss issues that overlap with issues in animal taxonomy. This book would be good for those who are interested in the history of botany or the history of science in general.

I. The Library

Discusses essentially the history of botany, notes ancient to contemporary botanists, notes famous gardens (in Universities, public, private), notes cultures that have contributed to botanical research, botanical commentators by countries/regions, illustrators of botanicals, notes different contributors to botany (Travelers, Physiologists, Systematists [Orthodox, Heterodox, Universal], Gardeners, etc), discusses many ways people have tried to classify botanicals (by roots, by chemical effects, by language, etc)

II. Systems

Shows the different classification systems used by many botanists, ends with his own classification system "Natural Method" (which is meant to be all that is needed in botany); notes that his system will be made more perfect as more knowledge accumulates and says "for nature does not make leaps" (49)

III. Plants

Discusses the Vegetables which are 7 families (funguses, algae, mosses, ferns, grasses, palms, and plants); the three parts of vegetables are the root, the herb, and the fruit-body; describes many leaf types and textures

IV. The Fruit-Body

7 parts of the fruit-body which are dedicated to reproduction (Calyx, Corolla, Stamen, Pistil, Pericarp, Seed, Receptacle) are discussed; fruit-bodies are classified as flowers and fruits and Linnaeus provides definitions of flowers by other authorities; the essences of flowers, fruit, fruit-bodies, vegetables discussed; extensively discusses how a fruit-body's structure needs to be described as 1 of 3 kinds (most natural, differing, peculiar) with 4 measurements (number, shape, proportion, position)

V. Sex

"...in the beginning of things, a single sexual pair of every species of living being was created."(99); how plants have spread across the globe; points about how vegetables are also living creatures as they have functional similarities to animals; offspring of plants come from both an "egg" and "sperm" since hybrid species exist; flowering comes before fruits emerge; the Anthers are the male genitals of plants and Pollen is the sperm; Stigmas are the female genitals; sexual systems in plants described; different sexual configurations: Male, Female, Hermaphrodites, Androgynous, Polygamous

VI. Characters

The Foundation of Botany is: "Arrangement" (divisions and connection of the vegetables i.e. Class, Order, Genera, etc) and "Nomenclature"; discusses "System" (Classes, Orders, Genera, Species, Varieties); "We reckon the number of species as the number of different forms that were created in the beginning." and "The number of species is the number of different forms produced by the Infinite Being from the beginning; and these forms have produced more forms, according to the laws laid down, but always ones that are similar to themselves. Therefore the number of species is the number of different forms or structures that occur today." and "That new species can come to exist in vegetables is disproved by continued generation, propagation, daily observations, and the cotyledons." (113); "A variety is a plant that is changed by an accidental cause: climate, soil, heat, winds, etc, and likewise it is restored by change in soil." and "Kinds of variety are size, fullness, curling, color, savor, and smell." "Nomenclature" is the 2nd foundation of botany and must be done on names after the "Arrangements" have been done; "If you do not know the names of things, the knowledge of them is lost also." (169); only genuine botanists should assign names to plants - he lists absurd names for plants that have been made before; names of a Class or Order should never be included in the name of a plant; general rules and linguistical protocols for generating names of plants; rules for avoiding lack of clarity and redundancy with other in use classifications (animals, minerals) or classifications from other fields (anatomists, pathologists, etc); extensively lists acceptable Latin and Greek names and unacceptable names; tempering or replacing agreed upon names after they are established can do much damage to Botany so it is better to invest time on getting correct generic names early on; shorter names are better since long names make things more confusing

VIII. Definitions

"A plant is completely named, if it is provided with a generic name and a specific name." (219); generally provides rules on making specific names; "Definitions that pass off varieties as species are erroneous." (221); "Size does not separate species." (223); features that draw comparisons between the species of a different genus are deceptive and the same applies to comparisons of species of the same genus (224-225); name of discoverer should not be applied to a definition; native location does not indicate separate species (264); rules on what belongs and what does not belong in definitions; other things that do not establish different species; leaves show most natural definitions; parts of the fruit-bodies often provide the best definitions; every definition must be taken from number, shape, relative size, and various parts of a plant; a specific name is either "synoptic" or "essential"; specific names must be in Latin (for precision) and generic names can be foreign (more broad); specific names should make use of positive terms (what it is), not negative terms (what it is not)

For those who are more interested in his most notable work "Systema Naturae" (which has animal, plant, and mineral taxonomies) you can look up one of the few English translations available "A general system of nature, through the three grand kingdoms of animals, vegetables, and minerals, systematically divided into their several classes, orders, genera, species, and varieties, with their habitations, manners, economy, structure and peculiarities" (1806) in 7 Volumes under the name Sir Charles Linne with contributions from William Turton. It was quite hard for me to find it, so I am giving out the information needed to find this book. Hopefully its easier for others to procure.

Worth reading for anyone interested in science or in how to organize large amounts of data into a rational system.

Carl Linné was a brilliant scientist and deserves more readers. (In fact, I wish I had enough time to become a botanist, after reading this book.) Not much of his work is available in English, but this Stephen Freer translation is very complete and a great introduction to his way of thinking. It's a bit hard to grasp without going back and forth in it a bit--did not really see its full logic until the end. My favorite parts were the Greek names, which I could mostly puzzle out, and trying to figure out how his system relates to my gardening knowledge (it doesn't--gardeners are focused on varieties, which botanists sniff at since varieties revert to their wild forms, the true species). Another enjoyable digression, his definitions of the now-obscure but still handy French measurements (a line, a nail, a thumb, a palm, a span, a fathom...man being the measure of all things and all). This book gave me a better understanding of Linné's classes, orders, and the natural genera, how they relate to each other, and what botany is exactly (the categorization of plants by their sex characteristics, the flower/fruit body, rather than non-essentials like color or size which vary enormously within species). It also gave me another ready-to-hand example of Enlightenment-era inductive organization of a huge set of facts, and the value of making and recording detailed observations in organizing those facts in a precise, reliable system.

Very expensive for what it is

At 44 dollars and listed as a hardback I was more than shocked when a book less than 200 pages arrived! Why on earth the publishers made this into a hardback is beyond me, for such a small book (without colour photos) it's a ridiculous format.

From the opening pages the writing struck me as appalling. Not only is the style annoying (it switches between trying to sound formal to writing in a somewhat immature, talky fashion) but there are grammatical errors everywhere (I'm not a stickler for grammar but the errors were really distracting!)- was this not even edited? What's worse is that the author apparently is a history lecturer at a university so one would expect something more insightful...

Whilst the author has researched Bardot's personal history very well, the writing and assessment of Bardot is terrible. The author also has no real understanding of cinema, which is obvious in his treatment of Godard's 'Contempt', and for someone writing about a film actress I think this is a real flaw.

All in all, a very disappointing book.

A Sad Mistating of the Truth

I always hesitate to criticize a fellow author, and I do so now with some regret, but Singer's biography of Bardot completely mis-states my interaction with her. I did not simply show up one day at La Madrague with a rose. What's more, neither Mijanou nor Bernard d'Ormale... and certainly not me... twisted her arm to write the introduction of my book, Bardot - Two Lives. She did it on her own. She did it because she wanted to. Because we'd forged a friendship. Because she trusted me. And, to set the record straight, while friendships with Brigitte are always difficult, I have never violated her trust. I do not know where he got his information. If he'd asked me, I would have told him. But he failed to check with a primary source and, while I wish Singer well, he got this, and other parts of her story, very wrong. Alas.

I have followed her life because she never lost her visibility, and I was fascinated by how she eventually parlayed her sex kitten professional life into the lover and protector of animals. She was so beautiful and labeled as a "sex symbol" that her life could have been simply a story of lost youthful beauty. That's the fascination with this woman. This book addresses many of my questions and embellishes her persona as a full woman who was able to channel her love of animals with such great passion that she literally maintained her stunning persona as a unique woman of another time. I liked it.

Difficult, yet filled with some good gems

Always on the quest to sink deeper into humility, I picked up a slender book by Dietrich Von Hildebrand titled, "Humility-Wellspring of Virtue". This short book is actually a collection of passages from Von Hildebrand's most famous work, "Transformation In Christ", believed by many to be a modern spiritual classic.

According to Pope John Paul II, Dietrich Von Hildebrand was one of the great ethicists of our time and a "20th century Doctor of the Church" ("Doctor" is Church-speak for "great teacher"). Pope Benedict XVI also has particular admiration for this German Catholic philosopher. These two endorsements alone should perk up the ears of anyone unfamiliar with Von Hildebrand.

Von Hildebrand philosophical expertise is on full-display in this book, as he approaches humility more from a theoretical point of view than a practical one. His incredible intellect is quite evident throughout the book. Many passages caused me to humbly think, "I don't understand this section, yet I'm still somehow aware of its brilliance." In a way, I was humbled as much by the complexity of Von Hildebrand's thought as the message itself. I feel that his words would only be fully comprehensible to a seasoned theologian or philosopher--this book would definitely not be my first suggestion for light reading on the topic of "humility."

Despite the difficulty of the book, there were still many gems I was able to pull out. Von Hildebrand dismisses some myths about humility, such as the belief that authentic humility necessitates the devaluing of one's own gifts. He corrects that belief by saying its not prideful to be honest about the gifts you have, but it is wrong to ascribe their origin to you instead of God. This was especially helpful to me, a person who is tempted to dismiss any compliment I ever receive.

I also liked his advice on the path to humiliation. According to Von Hildebrand, this path involves the welcoming of humiliation. "Humiliation" is a word with bad connotation in our society, but when viewed from the spiritual realm it is a great grace. Being "passed over" or being humiliated among others may seem uncomfortable, but it also a powerful way to grow more humble.

"Humility" is a full work on the subject of humility from a brilliant Catholic philosopher and theologian, and I think almost anyone could use something from the book in their quest for humility. However, if you're looking for a simpler text on this topic, I would probably point you elsewhere.

(In fact, a simpler text I've read on humility is Andrew Murray's small book, also titled "Humility" . Murray's book shares many of Von Hildebrand's themes.)

Humility IS a God-send

Though, for some, I would agree with a previous reviewer's 3-star take on this book (in which they supplied a typo'd quote), for many more readers, I think they would be missing one of the greatest treatises on Humility I've ever found if they were to take that review too seriously. This book is truly a profound work, but is definitely for thinkers, and may require a dictionary or search engine nearby at times.

Some issues with the previous reviewer's quote as given: it was typo'd in at least one early location, and took a deep, thoughtful piece straight out of context, which, together made it seem incomprehensible from the get-go. The book may be deep, but it does flow, and your understanding of the author's intent grows as it goes.

I will admit it took me a long time to read through this .25" thick booklet ... but that was because it has SO much meaning buried within each page, and I am a slow, absorptive reader anyway. Again, this work goes well with a deep thinking person, as does the concept of virtue. As such, it would probably not be too understandable for the feint of thought, and may not be their proverbial cup-o-tea. On the other hand, if you're a contemplative person, this book will be a literal God-send, and like any treasure, may take a little work to dig it up.
