About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

Do not buy this horrible excuse of a textbook!!!

I took an engineering statistics course this past semester that required the class to buy this textbook. One week after class started our professor informed us that this textbook contained quite a few errors in just the first few chapters. This "textbook" is written very poorly and has errors almost every few pages. The most glaring problem was that the answers provided in the back of the book for odd questions were sometimes incorrect. As in the problem would say what is 2+2 and the back would give you 5. This caused extreme confusion and frustration during the first week as our entire class bombarded our professor with questions as to how we did certain questions wrong when we were sure they were right. In addition to the errors in the answers provided, there were many grammatical errors scattered all over the book. A textbook should never have grammatical errors much less a $200 one. Usually, the errors are easy to spot out and can be overlooked but the major problem was when they occurred in the questions. In certain ones, the word 'and' would be used when they meant to use 'or' and sometimes words were missing completely. In statistics, the answer to a question that emphasizes 'and' or 'or' are drastically different especially when its the case of combinations or permutations. Simply put, whoever edited/proofread this textbook did not do their job even remotely correct and it should not be used for learning statistics as it will make you question whether you did the problems wrong or if the book simply made another avoidable mistake. I should make note that these problems were present in the fifth edition and I am not sure whether these same mistakes are in any of the previous or future editions. Do not buy this textbook and if it is on your class materials, inform your professor of the problems this textbook carries.

This book has SO MANY errors. Every page I find a mistake, and I don't mean little spelling errors I mean they didn't add correctly, or the formula that's being presented is wrong(!!!), or their charts are labeled incorrectly.

Also most the problems start out with "refer to Exercise __" which is on some other page or sometimes another chapter, so you have to constantly flip back and forth. Even the solutions manual was like that (which, by the way, you will need, because it's not always clear how they got their answers- only to find out they did it wrong!!)

And worse of all is the tables in the appendixes are not labeled right, so the book refers you to appendix D table 4, but it's the wrong set of values, the one you actually want is printed on the inside back cover that's not labeled at all!

Did this book not get edited? I kept wondering if maybe it was a semester project for some class.

I haven't even read one chapter and I have already made my decision about this textbook. There are glaring errors every page! And I'm not talking about just the exercises, in the examples and descriptions, too! I am not normally able to spot errors in this textbook, but this is just crazy. A rip off of money. The prose is forced, boring, and dull. Sounds like someone wrote this thing at the last minute.

Where can I get my own Leon???

I loved this story. The chemisty between Leon and Maybel was intense. This story had a little bit of sci-fi, fantasy and romance. The kind of romance with a strong Alpha character that will make you ache for me. Leon is assertive with what he wants and he wants Maybel and he goes through many channges to be all he can be for her. The sex scenes are steamy and fun. A great read!

A Reed Shaken By the Wind

This is a revelatory book about the culture of the Marsh Arabs in Iraq. The author travels with the famous expert, Wilfred Theisiger and gives the reader a deep understanding of why Iraq will resist any central government's attempt to form a cohesive central government. A classic!

The first work I have read by Gavin Maxwell, whom I always equated with Scotland and otters; in this account of his time spent with the Marsh Arabs of Iraq (1956), he tells of his first encounters with the animal, in the reedy waterways by the Tigris - and of his discovery of an otter species which was named after him.
But the main part of this work is of the place and the people, as he accompanies experienced adventurer, Wilfred Thesiger, in a reed canoe. staying in the reed homes of local sheikhs, he describes the villages, where each house is 'a tiny island of its own...we could see through their slit doors to firelit interiors where buffaloes shared their warmth with the human family. Not galleons perhaps, but Noah's Arks.'
We read of the huge bird life, the turtles, fish ...and huge numbers of wild pigs, the hunting of which occupies the locals - not for food, but to keep down the numbers of a fierce creature. And of local life - dances, disease, generosity and dishonesty...
Quite poetic at times, Maxwell describes a world which was to practically disappear under Saddam's rule, with the construction of canals - but is now being restored by ecologists.

Classic Travel Writing

I read Wilfred Thesiger's book about this trip first. That of course was a great travel/adventure tale, but Gavin Maxwell's book of the journey into the land of the Marsh Arabs is equally interesting, and I would rank it up there with the travel classics. Maxwell's book is also much funnier than Thesiger's more sober account of that trip. Maxwell has a wonderful eye for detail, and is able to successfully convey to the reader the feeling of what it was like to be among this most different culture.

Fabulous and in-depth look at the portrayals of Elizabeth I

In my quest to gobble up anything related to Queen Elizabeth I, I jumped at the chance to further my obsession and check out Bethany Latham's book, Elizabeth I in Film and Television: A Study of the Major Portrayals.

From the first film to feature Elizabeth, the silent movie Les Amours de la Reine Elisabeth with the Divine Sarah Bernhardt portraying the famed monarch to the more recent Elizabeth: The Golden Age, with the stunning Cate Blanchett as the Virgin Queen, Latham covers the map of Elizabeth portrayals. Elizabeth I in Film and Television explores the major Hollywood productions, television mini-series and even a few of the smaller roles, such as Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love and Tim Burtons' Alice in Wonderland.

Readers are given a back-stage pass and a behind the scenes look at each work. Bethany delves into the actress portraying Elizabeth, the historical accuracy of the film, status of the film industry, entertainment factor, people's sentiments of Elizabeth at the time of production, picture making capabilities of the day, and the director's vision/purpose of the movie. I was seriously impressed by the amount of research and at how thorough and in-depth her analysis was and have since began a mission to watch every movie covered in the book. For a non-fiction work I can tell you that this did not read dry at all! I had an inkling that I would enjoy the read, but I was quite surprised on how absorbed I became in it and not only because of Elizabeth, but even learning about the actresses, directors, the film industry in general and the history of picture making was fascinating!

Absolutely well written. This book has a very wide range of potential appeal. From novice to scholar, from historian to film critic, from teacher to student. Its got the lot in a small space. The author chooses her text carefully and sets out the salient issues perfectly. Usually titles and contents pages of books are either misleading or disappointing. Latham's book does not do any of these.

Great Biochem Resource

This book is a fabulous resource for anyone who wants a better understanding or really any decent understanding of biochemistry. What I liked most about this text is that each section starts generally (ie: purpose of the process, how it ties in as a whole, key steps and enzymes/products) then moves to the specifics (ie: all the steps,enzymes, products, and other details that are nice to know but not likely to be tested on). The book also constantly incorporates links between different processes/cycles and reminds you of where certain products are used, things that interfere with enzymes/products, etc. I will give the disclaimer that this book is a bit more prose versus quick bullet point review, although it is informative without being overly detailed, yet is rich in information. It is an easy read though. I'd recommend this book, it helped me out alot my first year of med school.

I purchased this as a gift for an outstanding student to use at college. It is colorful, concise and speaks well to the the reader who has to master a difficult subject.
It's imperative that students of science understand how pervasive chemistry is - not just a course to "get through" - a body of knowledge which gives insight into how their science "works".
Well-organised and well-written!
